    • A highly accurate, low-cost and easy-to-handle heating resistor type flow meter has a main air flow passage body forming a main air flow passage for allowing air flowing therethrough. A measuring module has a heating resistor for measuring a flow rate of the air inserted inside the main air flow passage body: The measuring module comprises the heating resistor inside an auxiliary air flow passage body forming an L-shaped auxiliary air flow passage having an inlet opening portion opening in a direction perpendicular to a main flow line of the air and an outlet opening portion opening in a direction parallel to the main flow line. The main air flow passage body comprises an orifice on a periphery of the inner side wall positioned in an upstream side of the air flow passage body. Both of the inlet opening portion and the outlet opening portion are arranged within a flow flux zone formed by extending the air flow from a top edge of the orifice in a direction parallel to the main flow line.

    • There is disclosed a thermal-type air flow measuring instrument which judges whether the direction of flow of a fluid, ranging from a static flow to a pulsating flow involving a reverse flow, is forward or reverse, and outputs a signal corresponding to the flow rate of the fluid, thereby measuring the flow rate with high precision. An auxiliary passage is provided in a fluid passage, and is constituted by first, second and third passageways. Two temperature sensing resistors are mounted respectively at an upstream side and a downstream side within the first passageway in close proximity to each other. Most of the fluid, flowed into the first passageway in a forward direction, flows through the second passageway. The third passageway serves to direct a reverse flow of the fluid toward the temperature sensing resistors. Results of measurement of the flow rate of intake air in an internal combustion engine indicate that a minus error due to a pulsating flow, experienced in the conventional construction, is eliminated almost completely, and that a plus error due to a reverse flow is reduced to about 1/10.

    • An air flow meter has a body forming a main passage defining an intake air passage of an internal combustion engine. An auxiliary passage within the main passage has a longitudinal passage in the axial direction and at least one transverse passage in the radial direction of the main passage. The auxiliary passage is defined by a member having a radially directed portion connected to an internal wall of the main passage. A hollow space is provided in the radially directed portion to render the wall thickness of the radially directed portion substantially uniform. Additionally, the hollow space is separated from the longitudinal passage by an auxiliary member which, in a preferred embodiment, surrounds a heat sensitive resistor.

    • In a flow sensor, detecting elements are provided at a sub-passage. A sub-passage wall contains a hole to drain accumulated liquid. A protrusion arranged close to the hole on an external surface generates dynamic pressure on the opening in response to external flow. Alternatively, a protrusion upstream from the hole on the inner wall surface produces a separation flow area for separating the flow from the internal surface near the hole, whereby pressure in the separation area is reduced and almost the same pressure differences on the internal and external surfaces openings result. This reduces leakage from the hole and changes in the distribution flow in the sub-passage between cases where the hole is blocked and not blocked, thus minimizing flow measurement errors. Structure may be provided close to the external surface hole opening to prevent a liquid film or drop from being formed on the opening by surface tension.
