Screw propellers. -Propellers, planes, &c. of aircraft comprise skeleton reinforcement members capable of withstanding stress and an enshrouding moulded mass of composite light materials. Fig. 1 shows a small aeroplane wing which is constructed by using a mould formed of two shells corresponding with the upper and lower surfaces of the plane. A tubular reinforcing-member a is supported in the mould, and the enshrouding mass b is introduced into the mould in the condition of a homogeneous paste which preferably consists of fragments of cork mixed with a solution of collodion in acetone. After desiccation in a stove, the wing is removed from the mould and varnished or surrounded by an envelope c of canvas, paper, or thin sheet metal such as duralumin. Cores may also be fixed within the mould for leaving recesses in the moulded mass. For larger planes, a reinforcement of longitudinal members and ribs is supported within the mould. Wires or metal trelliswork may also be embedded in the material. Another method of construction is to fix together two slabs of the material provided with grooves for accommodation of the reinforcing-members and holes for lightness, and to work the surface of the double slab to the desired shape. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) states that the natural period of vibration of the light mass should be outside the audible range; and that the reinforcement may be of flexible material, which is rendered rigid subsequent to assembly and may be adhesively secured. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
