摘要： A high precision, high power laser-radar system whose output beamwidth can be varied from a divergent to a convergent mode thus allowing for target acquisition, its high precision tracking and ultimately its destruction is described. Essentially the invention comprises an optical detector and an optical transmitter consisting of a steerable, large diameter, coherently packed, single mode optical fibre bundle, one end of which is compacted and optically polished to act as the transmitting aperture of the said laser-radar system while the other end of the said fibre bundle is unbound, with each individual fibre, or a small group of such fibres being optically coupled to one of many laser pulse amplifiers forming a large array of such amplifiers required to produce the transmitted laser output pulse energy.

Composition fuel.-A fuel, which can be used for burning with a forced draught in fireplaces or for gas manufacture, is made by pulverising " anthracite shale," mixing it with a cementing material containing calcium carbonate such as the waste from caustic soda works or the scum from beetroot sugar works, and with or without peat or other vegetable material, and then pressing the mixture into pellets. Suitable proportions are " anthracite shale " 50 per cent, peat or other vegetable material 40 per cent, and cementing material 10 per cent; but the combustible material may comprise nearly all anthracite or " anthracite shale," or part '' anthracite shale " and part slack, or part " anthracite shale " part slack and part peat or vegetable refuse such as spent tan. When the pellets are burnt in a domestic fireplace a blow lamp is used.

Couplings, automatic, of the type in which twin elements, each provided with a pair of coupling projections or hooks, are adapted to couple by horizontal swing, and to be locked automatically in the coupled position. Each coupling-head 8 is provided with a continuous inclined forward face between the hooks 9, 10 to take the buffing impact. Each head 8 is mounted to swing upon a vertical pin 7 carried by the forked end 1 of the buffer and draw-rod, and normally assumes the set-for-coupling position shown in Fig. 2 owing to the co-operation of a helical or inclined surface upon a projection on the fork 1 with a similar surface within a recess in the coupling-head. In the coupled position, each hook 9 enters a recess 11 behind the hook 10 of the other head, and each hook 10 enters behind the hook 9 of the other head. A sliding locking-block 15, mounted in an inclined slot 14 in each head 8, is normally in its foremost position, Fig. 9, under the action of gravity and of a spring 19, and projects into the space behind the hook 9. In the coupling operation, each block 15 is pushed back by the opposing hook 10 and is returned to engage a notch in the hook. To uncouple, the blocks 15 are pulled back by chains. Couplings, automatic, convertible to non- automatic.-To allow the use of a non-automatic link 26, Fig. 10, the head 8 is adapted to be reversed upon the pin 7 as shown, a recess 23 being provided to accommodate the link. The outer face 24 of the head is rounded to act as a buffing surface in this position, and the inner face 25 bears against a corresponding inclined face within the fork 1.

A tap A of the plug or screw-down type, or of other type to suit the nature of the contents of the vessel, has its shank B enlarged to form a bung. For this purpose it is threaded at D, D , on either side of a central flange C, to screw into a socket E on the vessel, which socket has a projecting lip K for protecting the screw portion D' of the bung. A recess G communicates with the bore H of the tap and also serves to receive an implement for screwing the device in and out of the vessel. When the device is made of wood, the portions D, D', are conical in shape, instead of being threaded.
