Fercussive drills.-In a chuck of the type wherein a wedge-shaped gripping-pad is arranged in connexion with a stirrup to grip the tool, the wedge h has its thickest part outwards and has an abutment i, at its inner end, against which the drill j bears. When the drill strikes a blow, it tends to tighten the grip of the wedge. The liner f is held in place by a lug g. The shoulder k prevents the wedge from falling out when the tool is removed.

Acetylene.-A chamber A fitted with a gas-tight cover a is provided at each side with a number of hinged shelves b which carry fixed or loose receptacles d for calcium carbide, and are supported by spring or gravity catches c. A shaft fitted with cams h is mounted between the two rows of catches, and is fitted outside the chamber A with a ratchet-wheel g. A rod k depending from the movable bell of the gas holder turns this wheel when it descends low enough, and one of the cams on the shaft then trips one of the catches c and causes one of the carbide containers to precipitate its contents into the water. The gas produced passes by the pipe m into the holder bell and raises it. When the bell descends again the operation is repeated. The shelves are restored by rack shaftsj.

摘要： 20,144. Halligan, J. C., and Ferguson, J. Sept. 1. Lithographic printing. - Relates especially to small jobbing machines. Fig. 1 shows a side view and Fig. 2 a front view. The feed-board A is recessed on its upper side to allow the operator, standing at the front of the machine, to see the work on the stone &c. Gauges A , A are fixed adjustably on the feedboard ; and the lower edge of the board is bevelled in order that a thick tympan B' may be placed on the roller B by which the work is pressed on to the stone. Small rollers or bearers D, D' support the stone carriage N as it moves under the pressing-roller B. A metal shield C, for keeping the work clean as it leaves the machine, is suspended in bearings at the front of the machine. The lever E for operating the belt fork and the foot brake F are under control of the operator at the front of the machine. G is the inking- slab, G' the distributers, G the inkers, and H the damping-rollers. Adjustable plates K, K on the sides of the stone carriage lift the rollers to clear the edge of the stone and allow them to glide smoothly on to its surface. On the ends of the roller-spindles are pinions gearing with a rack on the carriage, to prevent the rollers from slipping on the stone.
