摘要： An orientation guide comprising a housing arranged to couple to a surgical instrument. In one embodiment the orientation guide further comprises first and second indicators (22, 26). The first indicator (22) is pivotally coupled to the housing (20) such that the first indicator (22) can rotate relative to the housing (20) about a first axis (24) to maintain its angular position about the first axis (24) relative to a vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (20). The second indicator (26) surrounds the first indicator (22) and is pivotally coupled to the housing (20) such that the second indicator (26) can rotate relative to the housing (20) about a second axis (32) orthogonal to the first axis (24) to maintain its angular position about the second axis (32) relative to the vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (20). The angular position of the housing (20) about the first and second axes (24,32) is indicated by the position of the first indicator (22) relative to the second indicator (26). In a second embodiment the housing (2) comprises a cavity filled with a fluid. An indicator (4) is supported within the fluid such that the indicator (4) can rotate relative to the housing (2) about a first axis to maintain its angular position about the first axis relative to a vertical axis irrespective of movement of the housing (2). The indicator (4) comprises a marking arranged to indicate the angular position of the indicator (4) relative to the housing (2) about the first axis. The housing (2) has at least one transparent portion for viewing the marking. A measuring element (8) is coupled to the housing (2) and arranged to slide relative to the housing (2) to be aligned with the indicator marking such that the angular position of the housing (2) about the first axis can be recorded.

A flange extends from the first end and is adapted to rest on a labrum of an acetabulum. A formation for accepting a trackable instrument is provided to allow a tracking system to determine the orientation of the guide. An adjustable version is also described which allows the separation between the ends of the guide to be varied.

摘要： An implant assembly comprising an implant forming one component of a joint prosthesis, the implant comprising an articulating surface and an axial cavity arranged to receive an end of a bone, the axial cavity being generally circular in cross section in a plane normal to the axis of the implant. The implant assembly further comprises a spacing element detachable from the implant. At least a portion of the interior surface of the cavity is roughened and is arranged to abrade bone when the end of the bone is received in the cavity. The spacing element is arranged to prevent the implant from fully seating on the end of the bone such that the implant and the end of the bone are in a predetermined spaced apart arrangement. A method of implanting such an implant is also disclosed. The method comprises receiving the end of a bone in the cavity; rotating the implant assembly while applying axial pressure to the implant in the direction of the bone such that bone is abraded by the roughened surface; removing the spacing element from the implant; and applying an axial impaction force to the implant until the implant is fully seated upon the end of the bone.

The method comprises resecting the end of a bone (2) to leave a bone lip (6), coupling the surgical jig to the resected end of the bone (2), and pivoting the alignment guide (18) until the alignment guide (18) coincides with a required axis extending into the end of the bone (2).

摘要： A system comprising at least: a first container 22 containing at least a first surgical instrument of a first type 32 that is size specific and a second surgical instrument of a second type 34 that is size specific, wherein both the first and second instruments are of a first size; a second container 24 containing at least a third surgical instrument of the first type and a fourth surgical instrument of the second type, wherein both the third and fourth instruments are of a second size which is different from the first size; and a third container 30 containing at least a fifth surgical instrument of a third type which is size independent. The system allows instrumentation to be grouped and stored so that the number of instruments opened but not used in complex surgical procedures is reduced. The combination of the first and second containers (with instruments of a single size) allows the system to group instruments according to size and/or function, avoiding the need to open containers with instruments of a size that is not being used. The third container can provide instruments that may be used at more than one point in the procedure, to avoid needing to provide multiple instruments in different containers and to simplify inventory. The third container may also provide instruments used for determining the required size of the instruments in the first and second containers.
