    • A variable input data recorder is disclosed comprising a data input means and a data recorder means. The data input means can be programmed by actuating keys or levers while the data input means is located within or at a remote location from the data recorder means. When the data input means is inserted into the data recorder means, the action of a printing head effects movement of printing characters in accordance with the preactuated keys or levers to transfer the programmed information into the recorder to be recorded on a document. The invention is compatible for use with pushbutton keys or conventional slide levers operating at a local or remote location from the recorder.

    • A device for selectively passing or blocking credit cards introduced into a reading mechanism, passing the credit card for entry when, and only when, the card is oriented in a given position. The credit card has one corner thereof cut at a 45* angle. A pin is provided on the path of the credit card to coact with the corner of a leading edge thereof. The pin has a sloping angled surface which will coact with the angled cut of the card and allow the pin to be depressed and pass the card thereby when the angled cut corner strikes the pin signifying proper orientation; the pin also has a vertical blocking surface which will block passage of the card by engaging any other corner of the card signifying improper orientation thereof.

    • A direct image printing machine is provided especially adapted for composing a line of print on paper tape. The machine prints images from raised characters and coated transfer paper, such as carbon coated paper, onto a printable paper strip when these elements are stacked together and commonly compressed between a linearly closing anvil and piston. The machine may be used with a wide range of type style and sizes of raised characters. A control system regulates the force of the thrust during the printing process to guard against pressure overload on characters of a particular type or size. One of a series of flat platens of differing thicknesses is selectively used between the anvil and piston to control interference, the thickness of a selected platen member being correlated with the surface image area of a selected raised character during a printing operation is maintained below a predetermined maximum. Additionally, the printing machine is designed to accept only a master or printing disc having raised characters of an area to be used with a selected platen member and to reject other printing discs. The printing disc preferably is formed from a deformable, resilient, elastic, synthetic polymeric resin having raised characters of different areas.

    • A non-volatile, fast-set, heat-dry plastisol vehicle for printing inks is provided comprising a finely divided, substantially water-insoluble, thermoplastic, film-forming polyvinyl resin that is solid at room temperatures dispersed in a sufficient amount of a single compatible liquid plasticizer to form a plastisol, and an effective amount of a tackifying agent consisting essentially of liquid polystyrene to inhibit ''''flying'''' of the plastisol from a printing press and the like. After application to a backing member, usually paper stock, in a printing operation, the plastisol is heated above the softening temperature of the polyvinyl resin which then swells and effectively absorbs the liquid plasticizer and liquid polystyrene. Preferably, the polyvinyl resin is pigmented to provide a contrasting color with respect to the backing member on which it is printed. The use of liquid polystyrene as a tackifying agent reduces not only the number of different plasticizers needed but also the total amount of plasticization as compared to prior practice.

    • A printing machine which has a bed for supporting printing devices and a form to be imprinted, includes a carriage supporting a platen for movement between a raised position spaced from the form, and a lowered position in printing engagement with the form. The carriage is adapted to be moved from a home position across the bed to an actuated position to perform a printing stroke, and back to the home position in readiness for a subsequent printing operation. Means is provided for sensing the thickness of the form to be imprinted, and compensating means is provided for placing the platen at a printing position selected from a plurality of possible positions spaced from the bed as determined by the sensed thickness of the form. The platen is held at the selected printing position during a printing stroke and is restored to its raised position prior to return of the carriage to the home position.
