If the welding current I is less than a set current value at a point of time on the leading edge of a clock CK, then the control unit (20) holds a control pulse CS for the switching element Q active or high from that point of time till the time when the welding current I exceeds the set current value without being affected by the cycle of the clock CK. If the welding current I exceeds the set current value at a point of time on the leading edge of the clock CK, then the control unit (20) holds the control pulse CS inactive or low till a point of time on the leading edge of the next clock CK.
