    • An inflatable crown roll for a rolling mill is made entirely from castings and has a cavity of very small radial dimension. In one embodiment the arbor is cast in the usual way. Its surface bounding the cavity is coated with a refractory composition that will disintegrate after being heated to casting temperature. A sand mold for the sleeve is then formed around a pattern, the pattern is removed, the cast arbor is positioned vertically in the sleeve mold and the sleeve is cast around the arbor. The sleeve metal temperature is regulated so that the sleeve fuses to the arbor at its necks. The disintegrated coating is flushed out through drill holes in the sleeve by fluid, leaving a cavity between arbor and sleeve. A sleeve with a composition of metal on its working face different from that of its neck portion may be cast by positioning gates with shut-off valves and risers at appropriate positions in the sleeve mold. Another embodiment of the sleeve is cast in a vertical mold provided with a sand core on a vertical support, the core having an external surface which bounds the cavity. After the casting solidifies the core and support are disintegrated and removed. The cast sleeve is then turned end-for-end and its interior is filled with molten metal of a composition which will shrink but will not fuse with the sleeve material. The shrinkage provides the cavity between sleeve and core.

    • A controlled deflection roll having a roll shell rotatably mounted at its ends at a stationary roll support. Pressure or support elements are located between the roll shell and the roll support. The bearing or mounting arrangement of the roll shell at the roll support is provided with play, in a direction opposite to the direction of application of the force exerted by the pressure elements. In such play there is effective a force opposing the direction of the force of the pressure elements. If this force is exceeded by the force of the pressure elements, then a control device limits the force exerted by the pressure elements to a value which is not dangerous for the roll shell. According to a preferred construction the control device is constituted by a hydraulic shutoff element which, in the case of a hydraulic controlled deflection roll, opens an outflow channel leading from the pressure line or conduit, and thus, lowers the pressure effective in the pressure line.

    • An apparatus for adjusting the altitude of the chord of an expanding roll characterized in comprising; a central shaft bent in an arc-shape with the amount of its radial deflection increasing progressively toward the middle thereof from an imaginary straight line corresponding to the axis of an unbent central shaft; a plurality of eccentric discs or bushes rotatably fitted around said shaft and being spaced lengthwise along the axis thereof, said bushes having the their eccentricities increasing progressively toward the middle of said central shaft; a plurality of sleeves, in which said bushes are rotatably disposed respectively; a rubber roll covering said sleeves and integrated therewith to form a single rotatably unit; a plurality of tubular coupling members rotatably fitted around said central shaft between said bushes and coupling with adjacent bushes; rotating means fixedly disposed on an outwardly extending portion of the central shaft for the purpose of rotating said tubular coupling members; and a bearing journaling said central shaft so as to keep said central shaft fixed thereto and, in case of need, to permit said shaft to turn round therein.
