    • 1,167,878. Apparatus for sorting mail. TELEFUNKEN PATENTVERWERTUNGS G.m.b.H. 16 Dec., 1966 [27 Dec., 1965], No. 56453/66. Heading B8A. A device for separating parcels and like heavy postal items from letter mail comprises a cylinder 2 rotating on an inclined axis 1 and a cylinder 3 contra-rotating within the cylinder 2. The mixture of mail 7 is fed by an endless conveyer 6 into the upper end of the cylinder 2 wherein it is raised by arms 4 on the cylinder 2 and then allowed to fall freely on to the cylinder 3. The letter mail 12 adheres to the periphery of the cylinder 3 by suction provided within or below atmospheric pressure sector 9 whilst the heavier items 13 and the letter mail unable to adhere to the cylinder 3 return to the bottom of the cylinder 2 to be raised again on rotation thereof. A further sector 10 of the cylinder 3 is at above atmospheric pressure whereby the letter mail is released from the periphery of the cylinder 3 on to an endless conveyer 14. The sector 10 is arranged on that side of the second cylinder travelling upwards and is separated from sector 9 by a partition 11. The cylinder 3 is formed from perforated sheet metal with an outer covering of e.g. foam plastics. The parcels are discharged at the lower end of the cylinder 2 at the exit 18 on to an endless conveyer 20 and the letter mail is discharged from the exit 17.

    • 453,290. Separating solid materials. GREGORY, H. J., RADLEY, W. G., and TOLLEY, L. L., Post Office Engineering Research Station, Dollis Hill, Cricklewood, London. May 7, 1935, No. 14319. [Class 117] Apparatus for separating articles of different shape and size such as letters and parcels comprises a receptacle which is provided at its lower part with movable surfaces which converge at an angle to form a slot of predetermined width, the receptacle being formed so that a vertical cross-section through the interior enveloping surface of the lower part of the receptacle including the said converging surfaces nowhere affords a substantially horizontal support capable of carrying and retaining an envelope or other article, the surfaces being arranged so that articles of the requisite size will fall through the slot, means for moving one surface towards and the other away from the slot while maintaining the width thereof constant and means for periodically reversing the motion of the surfaces. In one form, the receptacle consists of two endless bands 1, 2 arranged to converge at their lower ends and carried by pulleys 3, 3a, 4, 4 . The pulleys 3, 4 are driven by a belt 9 from a source 10, including any suitable reversing mechanism. The bands need not be endless but may be fixed at their lower ends to the rollers 3, 4 and held at their upper ends by springs. An alternative form of apparatus is shown in Fig. 2 in which the receptacle has fixed sides 12 and a bottom formed of rollers 11. A series of devices having slots of graded width may be disposed one above the other.
