    • A Time Slotted Logical Ring protocol manages the flow of traffic in a duplex media including a cable distribution network with a head end, a local node, and a group of subscribers. The subscriber includes a cable modem which produces an HDLC serial interface which then goes to the subscriber or gets converted to ethernet by a router and then to the subscriber. The Time Slot portion of TSLR protocol manages upstream and downstream access and uses time tick identification frames in the downstream direction to control upstream traffic. A multiple logical ring protocol in TSLR is used to allocate cable bandwidth between the multiple subscribers.

    • Methods and apparatuses are provided for CDMA (code division multiple access) access availability to a large cell area, and for traffic channel establishment. A group of cell site modems are configured to look for access attempts generated in respective complete and/or sectorized circular or annular shaped areas centered at the center of the cell area, the areas collectively covering the cell area. To achieve this, each cell site modem has a local clock and the local clock within the first of the cell site modems is synchronized with a standard network time, and the local clock of each of the subsequent cell site modems is offset by a respective delay with respect to the standard network time which causes the cell site modem to search within its respective annular shaped area. A cell site modem is also made available as a traffic cell site modem and is operable to have its traffic acquisition search window centered at a location of an access attempt. Alternatively, a plurality of traffic cell site modems may be provided, each having dedicated circular or annular coverage areas within the cell. The traffic cell site modems also preferably have a local clock which may be synchronized, either to a standard network time, or to a respective delay which causes it to search in its respective area. Methods and for handing off between circular and annular shaped traffic coverage areas are also provided.

    • A device and method for communicating a common channel message in a CDMA communication system. The device comprises a base station transmitter and a common channel transmitter. The base station transmitter includes a specific channel transmitter for outputting a channel signal at a second transmission power level for a predetermined time duration and otherwise outputting the channel signal at a first transmission power level. The common channel transmitter transmits a common channel message at an assigned slot duration. A power supply voltage is provided to the receiver of the mobile station for the predetermined time duration and the assigned slot duration to enable the receiver. The power supply voltage to the receiver is otherwise disengaged from the power supply so as to allow the receiver to operate in a sleep mode.

    • Communication speed of a radio communication device such as a portable telephone is controlled according to temperature of a transmitting amplifier to avoid overheating of the device. The transmitting amplifier temperature is detected by a temperature detector installed in the device. When the transmitting amplifier temperature is lower than a first temperature, the communication speed is set at a high level to transmit both voice and image data. When the transmitting amplifier temperature exceeds the first temperature, the communication speed is automatically switched to a low level to avoid overheating of the device. Under the low speed communication, only the voice data are transmitted. When the transmitting amplifier temperature becomes below a second temperature that is lower than the first temperature, the communication speed is switched back to the high level to resume transmission of both voice and image data. Thus, the communication device is protected from overheating without interrupting communication.

    • A CDMA cellular system does not require accurate synchronization between all base stations and is capable of distinguishing the base stations from each other without the need for a complex process. When two element codes are multiplied with shifted timing to generate a spreading code, different codes that do not agree with each other when cyclically shifted are generated for the respective base stations. Spreading codes of the base stations are distinguished even when the base stations are not kept in synchronism with each other. In the CDMA cellular system which uses such spreading codes, when frame synchronization is achieved using a perch channel spread by a spreading code that is common to all the base stations, a signal transmitted from one of the base stations is de-spread on the basis of a first element code which is of the same timing (phase) with respect to a frame in all the base stations. Since the de-spread signal is a signal produced by shifting a second element code with timing (phase) which differs from base station to base station, a spreading code that is being used can be identified by a correlated value calculating unit.

    • A multistage detector is disclosed that maximizes computation power while minimizing system delay. The differencing multistage detector receives signals from a plurality of users in a cell of a communications system and reduces the effect of multiple access interference to a signal from a desired user caused by interference from other users in the cell. The differencing multistage detector includes a plurality of stages, each stage including an interference canceller for removing intra-cell interference caused by the other users in the cell and producing an estimation output vector, wherein except for a first stage, the estimation output vector of a current stage is based on both a decision of the interference canceller of the current stage and the output from an interference canceller of a previous stage. The estimation output vector of a current stage is produced by combining the output from an interference canceller of a previous stage and the decision of the interference canceller of the current stage. Except for the first stage each interference canceller calculates an estimate of multi-user interference by computing a product of a cross-correlation of the received signals and a difference signal thereby reducing the number of multiplication operations required.

    • A receiver scans through two different search windows to detect a received signal: a first search window and a second search window. The timing of the second search window is adjusted after every processing cycle to follow the detected signal, while the timing of the first search window remains fixed. If the timing of the detected signal remains relatively constant for a sufficient period of time, then the timing of both the first search window and the second search window are adjusted based on the timing of the most recently detected signal. In this way, the receiver can continue to detect the received signal, even when the timing of the received signal varies greatly over time, without necessarily changing the first search window.
