    • Diffraction causes light to bend toward and perpendicular to an object's edge. In a current peep's aperture, diffracted light is neither controlled nor eliminated. In current peeps, diffracted light impairs accuracy, therefore current apertures must be oversized to allow space for the diffracted light. Visual size and shape of current aperture will vary with changes in light diffraction. Slotted peep (22) eliminates detrimental effects of diffracted light from its aperture. By surrounding an open space with the open ends of slots, a space is defined that has virtually no physical edges. Slotted peep (22) confines diffracted light within the slot. The figure shows slotted peep (22), however a user looking through slotted peed (22) sees (20). Light diffracted perpendicular to the edges of the slots darkens the slots. Slotted peep's aperture (20) will be virtually free of diffracted light and will not have the aforementioned shortcomings of current peeps.

    • The present invention is directed to a sighting device having an aperture (196) with a series of visual reference points framing the aperture (196) that are used in concert with a vertical front sight (192) to quickly acquire and precisely aim a firearm at a target (194). The visual reference points framing the aperture are readily discernable to a shooter, even though the reference points and the aperture may be visually out of locus as the shooter concentrates on the target. The visual reference points framing the aperture (196) are in the form of edges, angles, and vertices that take advantage of the human eye's natural acuity for angular geometric shapes as the shooter visually coordinates the position of the present invention with the vertical front sight (192) and a target (194). The unobstructed field of view provided by the aperture portion (196) of the present invention combined with readily discernable geometrically shaped visual reference points framing the aperture (196) assist the shooter in precisely aiming a firearm, or other projectile propulsion device, at a target (194). In addition, rapid and accurate adjustments, or refinements, in the shooter's aim at a target (194) are readily effected with the present invention.
