The latch may be a vertically-sliding, spring- loaded rod 129 terminating in a roller 131, Fig. 3, or a plate 37, Fig. 1 (not shown), or alternatively a pivoting yoke 207 with a leaf spring latching member 211 as best seen in Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown). The arm may be spring loaded by a coil spring(s) or by pressurized fluid or gas (not shown). The carriage may include means 113 for locking the front two rollers. Reference is made to Specification 1,475,293.

    • 1381786 Springs; dampers AMETEK Inc 9 May 1972 21664/72 Heading F2S In a self-erecting means, Fig. 1, e.g. for elevating a camera or extending equipment from a space capsule, the normally axially-compressed helical spring ribbon which erects to become a tube 4 is supported at one end on a member 10 bearing a damper such as an unwound spring 76, Fig. 2 (or a ratchet and spring-rod (102, 108), or a blade-and-fluid damper (126, 128)) in a reel 16 for a line 18 which is linked by eyes 22, 24 to the other end of the spring ribbon coil 4 and anchored at 26 on the support 10. The reel 16 has end plates 56, 60 with a handle 84 for winding-in the line 18 and thus compressing and retracting the tubular coil 4. The plates 56, 60 rotate with a keyed shaft 52 journalled in end plates 32, 34 secured by a tie bar 36 and a bracket 40 to the support 10 and flanking a drum 48 for receiving the line 18 as shown. The drum is keyed to the shaft at 50 and the damping spring 76 is secured for action between the shaft 52 and the fixed plate 34 (by way of its housing 72 and a fixing 80). When the tubular coil 4 is wound down (unwinding the spring 76 to the state illustrated) a plate 90 is slid into slots 86, 88 in the drum plates 32, 34 to lock the coil in the retracted storage position until withdrawn to allow the coil to re-erect. When extended, the coil 4 can be eased out of cups 8, 12 and used as a pole. The damper may comprise a ratchet wheel (102) secured to the shaft (52) with spring rods (108) extending from the end plate 34 to engage its teeth. Alternatively, a casing (122) containing hydraulic fluid is secured to the plate 34 and has arcuate blades (126) interdigitating with blades (128) secured to a plate (130) which closes the casing (122) and is fixed to the shaft (52).
