    • 1,084,787. Tufting machines. SINGER CO. Oct. 13, 1964 [Oct. 16, 1963], No. 41795/64. Heading D1G. A multi-needle tufting machine comprises fabric shifting means for engaging the backing fabric substantially along the line of needles and for shifting the fabric along said line laterally of the direction of feed and relatively to the fabric feed means. A needle plate 10 is provided with fingers which are spaced apart at the needle gauge and which extend in the direction of work feed. Plate 10 is mounted on a bed 9 for movement transverse to the feed direction, and is connected by a link 21 to one arm of a lever 22 pivoted at 23 to the machine frame. The other arm carries a roller 24 engaged in a cam groove 25 in a disc 26 rotated by gearing 29 to 34 from the main shaft 3. Groove 25 comprises concentric portions 35 of varying radii connected by portions 36. The arrangement is such that the follower 24 engages a concentric portion 35 while the needles 8 are down and pass between the fingers, which follower 24 engages a portion 36 while the needles are up to move the needle plate laterally a multiple of the needle gauges. A presser bar 37 bears upon the fabric at the fingers to ensure that the fabric and the needle plate move together laterally. The needle plate may be provided with freely-rotatable rollers having radial pins engaging the fabric.

    • 1306257 Tufting SINGER CO 3 March 1970 [3 April 1969] 10066/70 Heading DIG Dense pile fabric is formed, in a tufting machine having a needle plate 28 movable transversely to the direction A of fabric feed, by restraining the lateral shifting movement of the fabric before the needle plate has travelled its full range of movement. This results in a lateral tuft stagger of less than the needle spacing. The apparatus disclosed for carrying out the invention is substantially the same as that disclosed in Specification 1084787 but the loopers 34 are directed against the direction A so that the effect of the loops engaged thereon, and or the engagement of the needles 24 in the fabric, provide therestraining action.
