    • 740,491. Lathe details. SPORNDLI, M. June 24, 1953 [June 25, 1952], No. 17529/53. Class 83 (3). A turret tool-holder for lathes &c. has conical seating means for the turret and locking, means for holding the turret in several indexed positions, the locking means including a movable member 17, Fig. 1, parallel to the turret shank 3, and the tool-holder carrying means which are operable by a handle 8 so that on swivelling the latter in one direction the turret is released from its seating and the locking means are released, whereupon further swivelling in the same direction causes the member 17 to locate the turret in a new position, reverse swivelling of the handle then locking and clamping the turret in the new position. The turret 1 is secured to a spindle 3 having a conical seating 28 which is clamped against a similar seating 29 in a rectangular-sectioned housing 4 in the working position. A sleeve 7, with operating handle 8, is screw-connected to the housing by threads 11 and fits over an extension 5 of the spindle 3. When the handle is turned righthandedly the sleeve 7 moves inwardly and carries with it a nut 13 attached to the extension 5, thus forcing the turret-stem from its conical seating. At the same time a projection 25, secured to the sleeve 7, cams an inclined lug 24, Fig. 3, on a rectangular sleeve 23 to move the latter outwardly and with it the locking plunger 17. Continued movement of the handle in the same direction engages a spring- pressed pawl 9 with a ratchet-toothed ring 6, thus rotating the turret to the next indexed position. On reverse rotation of the lever 8 the projection 25, having cleared the lug 24, cams it towards the turret and the locking-plunger enters the newly-positioned index recess 19. Continued movement of the lever draws the turret on to the seating 29. The sleeve 13 and locking-screw 14 permit adjustment of the final clamping movement.
