    • A new self-mating mechanical fastener is disclosed, which comprises a base sheet and a multiplicity of parallel, narrowly spaced, elastically deformable ribs projecting from the base sheet. The ribs comprise a stem portion attached to and substantially upright from the base sheet and at least one flange attached to each side of the stem portion and spaced from the base sheet. At least the outer portions of the flanges desirably project toward the base sheet. The cross-sectional profile formed by the ribs is substantially uniform over the length of the ribs, but in the direction transverse to the ribs has a regularly repeated deviation from the profile that would be formed by a full population of equally spaced, identical, undivided, symmetric ribs. An individual rib has a width that is accommodated between the stem portions of adjacent ribs but is greater than the gap between the facing flanges of adjacent ribs, whereby the ribbed surface of the fastener can be interengaged with and connected to an identical ribbed surface. The fastener can take various forms, but fasteners in elongated strap form are particularly advantageous for use as a binding strap. A method for binding at least one article is also disclosed.

    • A clip assembly is disclosed in which the clip ends have rotational freedom and limited radial freedom. The clip assembly comprises a first resilient clip member and a second resilient clip member, each having an opposed jaw end and a bridged back end. The first resilient clip member further defines a slot extending across the bridged back end. The second resilient clip member defines a post having an enlarged spherical head extending longitudinally from the bridged back end. The head of the post has a diameter which is slightly greater than the width of the slot. The second chip member is connected to the first clip member for rotational freedom of movement around the longitudinal axis of the clip by receipt of the spherical head through the slot.

    • A closure device providing a visual confirmation of occlusion. The closure device includes a first and a second interlocking fastening strips which are arranged to be interlocked over a predetermined length, at least one of the fastening strips having a surface alteration providing visual confirmation of occlusion of the closure device. The surface alteration may be a slit which opens or closes upon occlusion of said closure device. In one embodiment, the surface alteration may extend into a coextruded portion. The color of the coextruded portion is exposed when the surface alteration is open and hidden when the surface alteration is substantially closed. In another embodiment, the surface alteration may extend into an edge glow material which produces an edge glow effect when the surface alteration is open. In a third embodiment, the surface alteration may extend through an opaque side wall to expose the color of the base. The surface alteration may be location on the mating side, the non-mating side or both sides of one or both of the bases. In addition, the surface alteration may be located on the closure element. The opening or closing of the surface alteration may be achieved by a deformation in the closure device upon occlusion of the closure device. The deformation may be an inward deformation or an outward deformation on the fastening strip. This deformation may also allow a user to tactually confirm that the closure device has been occluded, even after the closure device has been occluded. The deformation may be on one or both of the fastening strips. In addition, the fastening strip may include multiple deformations.
