    • A pressure-balanced hydraulic coupling suitable for undersea use comprises a male member having one or more flow ports on the side of its probe section and a poppet valve actuator extending from the end of the probe section which has a fluid-tight seal around the actuator. The female member has a removable annular flow piece for fluid communication with the flow ports in the probe of the male member. In certain embodiments the annular flow piece has integral probe seals. In other embodiments, the removable annular flow piece comprises a seal retainer. In yet other embodiments, the removable annular flow piece comprises the inner part of a two-part seal cartridge.

    • Disclosed is a flexible joint for sealing two conduits. One half of the joint includes an annular seal gland with an outer surface defining a static seal face. The other half of the joint includes an inner race member having inner and outer bearing surfaces, the inner surface spaced apart from and generally opposing the outer surface of the seal gland and having a region defining a dynamic seal face. An annular bellows constructed of a plurality of convolutions having varying convolution heights is disposed between the first and second seal faces to form a low leakage seal. The heights of the convolutions decrease in the direction of the first to the second seal faces.

An annular chamber 56 formed between the bellows 20 and housing 26 is filled with a fluid, such as silicon or oil. Means is provided for adjusting the volume of the chamber 56 or volume of fluid in the chamber 56 to maintain an approximately zero pressure differential across the bellows 20.

A latch mechanism on the portion of one mandrel is engagable with the part of the other mandrel, to hold said mandrel against axial separation. At least one seal assembly includes a metal sealing ring positioned to seal between a radially outer and inner substantially cylindrical surfaces on the mandrels. An annular cylinder and a co-operating annular piston formed on one mandrel and on a ring attached to the mandrel, to form a pressure compensation chamber surrounding said portion rings provide a fluid tight seal between said annular piston and cylinder. A fluid passage provides communication between the interior of said one mandrel and the compensation chamber, the seal assembly and the compensation chamber being dimensioned whereby forces produced to separate said mandrels of a pair of fluid pressure within the mandrels are equalized by the pressure compensation chamber. Frangible tubular bolts normally hold the mandrels in interengagement, break when a predetermined stress is applied thereto, the piston and cylinder then moving axially relative to one another to allow limited axial movement between said mandrels, sufficiently to permit the retaining means to move axially to release said latch mechanism. The interior is filled with a waterproof grease or jelly.

A retaining shoulder on the first mandrel retains the latch mechanism in engagement and a tubular sealing is positioned to seal the two mandrels.A fluid-tight pressure compensation chamber surrounds said portion of the first mandrel and is engageable directly or indirectly on said one mandrel and said other mandrel of the pair. A fluid passage provides communication between the interior of the mandrel and its associated pressure compensation chamber, the seal and its associated compensation chamber being dimensioned whereby forces produced to separate the mandrels of a pair are substantially equalized by the fluid pressure appearing in the fluid compensation chamber. Frangible securing means, such as a bolt, normally holds the two mandrels in interengagement but break when a predetermined stress is applied, the pressure compensation chamber being axially crushable when the frangible means break, thereby allowing limited axial movement between the mandrels, sufficiently to permit the retaining shoulder to move axially to release the latch mechanism, thereby to allow the mandrels to disengage from one another.

A bearing is provided between the inner tube and the intermediate tube to allow the parts to rotate relative to each other. The annular seal has a pair of opposite pressure-equalizing surfaces both exposed to the full pressure inside the swivel.

    • A pipe joint with a ball socket, a ball pin, and a socket nut for connecting the socket and pin together. The fluid passage extending axially through the ball socket and ball pin are sealed against leakage around the socket nut by packing rings. The end of the ball pin that is received in the ball socket is flared outwardly to allow for angular movement of the pin relative to the socket. The existance of a seal between the flared end of the pin and the socket causes a pressure differential urging the ball and socket to move apart. In order to overcome this danger, a channel extends from the flow passage in the ball pin to the area between the socket and the pin to reduce the pressure differential tending to cause separation of the elements in the joint.
