In an exemplary embodiment, a method for determining the proper operational current input includes sending a test signal to an input of an electric motor. A response to the test signal is measured using an output of the electric motor. Based on the measured response, a position of a brush that is capable of conducting current through a commutator of the electric motor is determined. The electric motor is supplied with a first current input if the brush is in a first position and a second current input if the brush is in a second position.
