    • An open-split interface includes a connector body having four leg members projecting therefrom within a single plane, the first and third legs being coaxial and the second and fourth legs being coaxial. A tubular aperture extends through the first and third legs and a second tubular aperture extends through the second and fourth legs, connecting at a juncture within the center of the connector body. A fifth leg projects from the connector body and has a third tubular aperture extending therethrough to the juncture of the first and second tubular apertures. A capillary column extends from a gas chromatograph into the third leg with its end adjacent the juncture. A flow restrictor tube extends from a mass spectrometer through the first tubular aperture in the first and third legs and into the capillary columnm end, so as to project beyond the end of the third leg within the capillary column. An annular gap between the tube and column allows excess effluent to pass to the juncture. A pair of short capillary columns extend from separate detectors into the second tubular aperture in the second and fourth legs, and are oriented with their ends spaced slightly from the first capillary column end. A sweep flow tube is mounted in the fifth leg so as to supply a helium sweep flow to the juncture.

    • Disclosed is a sampling method and apparatus in which sampling is accompanied by the steps of inducing a sample to flow into an outer chamber and excluding the sample from an inner chamber by inducing a first pressure zone in the inner chamber such that a substantially discrete interface between the first pressure zone and sample is formed at an orifice between the outer chamber and inner chamber; sufficiently reducing the first pressure zone in the inner chamber to induce the sample to flow through the orifice between the outer chamber and inner chamber and into the inner chamber such that first pressure zone-sample interface is substantially undisturbed when it moves through the orifice between the outer chamber and inner chamber; inducing the sample to flow from the inner chamber into an inner tube having an orifice within the inner chamber which forms a pathway to a detector such that the first pressure zone-sample interface remains substantially undisturbed; inducing a second pressure zone in the inner chamber such that a substantially discrete interface between the sample and second pressure zone is formed at the inner tube orifice; and inducing the sample to move along the pathway such that the first pressure zone-sample interface and second pressure zone-sample interface are substantially maintained.

    • A gas chromatograph comprising two separating devices disposed one behind the other, and through which a material sample is conducted by a carrier gas. A pressure regulator regulates the pressure of the carrier gas introduced into the first separating device. A controllable switching device is arranged between the two separating devices. The switching device contains a main gas path lying between the two separating devices and two auxiliary gas paths, which are connected to the main gas path through connecting gas paths and are both fed with the carrier gas and contain flow resistors and a controllable valve for setting different pressure conditions. The auxiliary gas paths are supplied with the carrier gas through the same pressure regulator to reduce the design and adjustment effort in setting the pressure conditions, where fixed resistors are used for the flow resistors.
