    • Drying a planar substrate such as paper sheet goods for packing materials includes layering a phase change material (PCM) on a substrate, in which the substrate has a moisture content and adapted for moisture removal to form a planar medium. A drying process disposes the substrate adjacent to a plurality of rollers and heat the layered substrate to a predetermined temperature based on a specific heat of the PCM. The rollers advance the layered substrate in series through pocket ventilation regions between the heat transfer elements, such that the pocket ventilation regions permit drying of the substrate enhanced by the specific heat of the temperature sensitive material. Upon drying, the layered substrate forms the planar medium suitable for use as a packing medium or other suitable application. The pocket ventilation regions are based on the PCM to facilitate drying and eradication of moisture from the paper planar substrate.

      SOLUTION: This functional roll includes a lattice-shaped gas-liquid guidepath structure for operating the internal pressure of the roll axis constituted of a high density porous sheet raw material on a peripheral surface of the roll axis having a pore. The lattice-shaped gas-liquid guidepath structure is constituted of an internal pressure action chamber formed of the peripheral surface of the roll axis and a cutout part arranged in the axial direction of the roll body, and an internal pressure branch action passage communicating with the internal pressure action chamber, arranged in the radial direction of the roll body and formed of a low density porous sheet raw material or a space.

    • Conventional art has a structure consisting of a roll axis incorporating a structure of fine pores, and a roll unit provided around the outer circumference of a roll axis, wherein internal pressure of the roll axis is dispersed to the roll unit to make a fluid (gas-liquid) suction action, thus reducing the pressure loss and obtaining even distribution of the fluid (gas-liquid). As such, instead of a tubular roll axis, the structure of a roll axis is made fin-shaped or groove-shaped to maximize the action surface area that works on the inner pressure of the roll axis of the roll unit. However, other problems such as inefficiency of the fluid (gas-liquid) suction action and lack of mechanical strength of the roll axis remains. To solve these problems, this invention provides a functional roll incorporating a structure of a lattice-shaped fluid (gas-liquid) guidepath made of high-density porous sheet material to activate the internal pressure of the roll axis, therein the structure of the lattice-shaped fluid (gas-liquid) guidepath, consisting of an internal pressure action space made of a cut-out portion provided on the circumference of the roll axis, and in the axis direction of the roll unit, and an internal pressure branching guidepath made of low-density porous sheet material, or a space communicating with the internal pressure action space, as well, being provided in the radial direction of the roll unit.
