    • A coater head has a housing which defines a coating pond supplied with coating under pressure. A plurality of bars extend within the coating pond in the cross-machine direction, and are spaced parallel to one another in the machine direction. A paper web is engaged against a backing roll, and travels through the coating pond past a metering blade which applies coating from the pond to the web. The bars induce a turbulent flow which shears bubbles of air entrained in the coating pond, thereby reducing the bubble diameters and air-induced imperfections in the coating. Greater machine speed, which tends to entrain more air, induces greater shear at the bars which causes bubble size to be more greatly reduced.

    • An improved short dwell type coater (18) and method are provided. The coater (18) can coat a web (26) directly or a moving roll surface (26' or 27') as in a film coater or size press. The flow path in the coater includes a flow modifier (54) shaped to have the introduced coating first turn upstream relative to the web (26) or roll surface (26' or 27'), then turn across a curved surface (73, 74) toward the web (26) or roll (26' or 27') and around the flow modifier (54). The flow then converges toward the top of the flow modifier (54) and passes the tip (63) of the flow modifier. Some flow remains on the web (26) or roll (26' or 27') and is subsequently doctored, while most is turned away from the web (26) or roll (26' or 27') and merged with the incoming flow. A gap (46) filled with coating overflow provides a liquid seal. This coater and method use coating, reduce vortices and streaking, and can operate at higher speeds.

    • A coating apparatus for applying a coating onto a surface of a moving web (Wa). The apparatus includes a backing member (12a) which defines a perforate surface (36) such that when the member (12a) is connected to a source of partial vacuum (38), the web (12a) is drawn towards the perforate surface (36) of the member (12a). A coating blade (20a) is disposed adjacent to the backing member (12a) such that the blade (20a) urges the web (Wa) towards the perforate surface (36). A permeable belt (40) extends around the backing member (12a) with the belt (40) being disposed between the web (Wa) and the backing member (12a) such that when the source of partial vacuum (38) is connected to the backing member (12a), air flows through the belt (40) and the perforate surface (36) for drawing the web (Wa) into close conformity with the belt (40). The belt (40) and the web (Wa) then move together in the same direction for inhibiting the buildup of deleterious material adjacent to the blade (20a) that would otherwise remain adjacent to the blade (20a) causing marking of the coating applied to the surface of the web (Wa) by the blade (20a).
