The outer layer of the container is made of a material including a volume of coolant capable of being frozen to temperatures substantially below zero degrees Centigrade, such as −26° C. An inner layer of the container includes a volume of water that is selected relative to the volume coolant in the outer layer such that, when the two layers are combined, material held within the inner layer is maintained above 0° C. Both inner and outer layers of the container may be structured, for example, as envelope products.

The peripheral wall has at least two layers and is divided into elongate pockets between the layers, with foldable crease lines between adjacent pockets. Each pocket contains a flexible-walled, insulating gel pack which substantially fills the pocket. The crease lines may be defined by stitching securing the outer and inner layers of the container together. The gel packs may be surrounded by matting, foam or mesh material which is sewn into the lines of stitching, or may have integral peripheral rims sewn into the lines of stitching. The container is foldable between an erect, open condition and a storage condition in which it is folded along the crease lines into a substantially flattened package.

The container of the invention is used for the transport of materials that are particularly sensitive to temperatures below zero degrees Centigrade. There is disclosed a container having a two layer structure. The outer layer (3) is made of material including a coolant (31) able to be frozen to temperatures substantially below zero degrees Centigrade, for example, to -26 °C. An inner layer (1) includes a volume of water (10), the volume being selected relative to the volume of the coolant in the outer layer, such that when the two layers are combined, material held in the inner layer is maintained above 0 °C. Conveniently, both inner and outer layers of the container may be structured as flexible envelope products.
