According to the invention, the outer surfaces are symmetric in relation to a vertical longitudinal plane (2) of the transverse girder. The underside (3) is substantially a flat, horizontal lower surface (b) facing towards the vehicle roof. The upper width (a) of the transverse girder (1) is smaller than (b). The upper side (4) and the underside (3) are connected via convexly curved and rounded lateral surfaces (5, 6). Relationships and ratios of width and curvatures provide improved aerodynamic characteristics and a reduction of the noise level caused by wind according to the invention.

摘要： There is provided a roof bar (110) having a generally tear-drop shaped cross-section, wherein a rear side of the bar is cut-off short of tapering to a point and such that the width of the bar is less at a mid-point of the cross section than at spaced positions on either side. Consequently, the roof bar has a depression (112) on the rear facing surface. Advantageously, the depression (112) can be used to improve the attachment of accessories (120). Accessories, including feet for attaching the roof bar (110) to the vehicle, are connected to the roof bar. In the exemplary embodiments, the accessories (120) are assembled using a saddle (130) arranged to substantially envelope the outer periphery of the roof bar. A tension means (124) is provided to apply a compressive force across two portions of the saddle (130) so as to clamp the saddle to the roof bar (110). Advantageously, the saddle (130) includes a protrusion (132) that is received by the depression (112) in the rear of the roof bar. Engagement of the protrusion (132) and depression (112) resist movement, for instance, rotation of the accessories (120) about the bar, by keying together.

摘要： A vehicle article carrier system is disclosed for use on an outer body roof surface of a vehicle to removably support articles above the outer body roof surface. The system makes use of a cross bar assembly having a central tubular portion and telescopically coupled outer cross bar portions. A locking lever may be used to lock at least one of the outer cross bar portions to prevent telescopic movement. A pair of end supports is used to latch to door jam areas of the vehicle. The end supports each have a construction such that both can be configured in a generally planar configuration to enable easy stowage of the cross bar assemblies, and each pivoted into an angled configuration which places the tubular cross bar portion above the vehicle outer body surface when the cross bar assembly is secured to the door jam areas.
