    • This invention relates to mechanical double acting mechanism for actuating valve pins in a valve gated injection molding system. A number of valve gate units are aligned with a pneumatically driven toothed rack member. The rack member engages a hollow rotatable pinion member which is secured in each unit against transverse movement. The driven end of the valve pin is fixed in a bushing which extends through the pinion member and threadably engages it. The valve pin is actuated between the open and closed positions by longitudinally driving the rack member which rotates the pinion member and the bushing. In addition to providing a reliable and relatively inexpensive actuating mechanism, provision is made for relative axial adjustment of the valve pins prior to the commencement of operation which provides accurate valve seating without unduly high manufacturing tolerances.

    • A manifold system (50) comprising a main manifold (56) with a plurality of arms (64), a plurality of sub-manifolds (52) spaced from the main manifold (56) and communicating with the main manifold (56) through a plurality of melt transfer bushings (68) disposed between the main manifold (56) and the sub-manifolds (52). The melt transfer bushings (68) may include static mixers (140) to homogenize the melt. The manifold system (50), as shown in FIG. 5, has better thermal and geometric balance, closer nozzle spacing, and better bolting for less plate bowing.

    • An injection molding apparatus includes a manifold having a manifold channel for receiving a melt stream of moldable material under pressure and delivering the melt stream to a nozzle channel of a nozzle. The manifold includes a manifold plug fit within a bore thereof and having a plug melt channel for fluidly connecting the manifold melt channel and the nozzle melt channel. The manifold plug further includes a valve/pressure disk portion that abuts with a back plate of the injection molding apparatus to maintain the spacing therebetween and to accommodate thermal expansion of the manifold relative to the back plate. In an injection molding application utilizing a valve-gated nozzle, the manifold plug may further include a valve pin receiving/guiding bore that functions as a valve pin bushing for a valve pin. A mold cavity communicates with the nozzle channel of the nozzle to receive melt through a mold gate.

    • A system for pressure molding plastic material includes a source of hot flowable plastic material and a manifold for receiving hot flowable plastic material from the source and for transporting the hot flowable plastic material to a nozzle that is disposed within a nozzle cavity. A heater is provided to heat the nozzle and is positioned outside of, but close to, the nozzle cavity and includes at least one electrical supply wire. A shut-off seal is positioned within the nozzle cavity to seal the nozzle with respect to the wall defining the shut-off cavity. In addition, a secondary seal is most advantageously positioned between the shut-off seal and the heater for ensuring that any hot flowable plastic material that might leak through the shut-off seal does not come into contact with the electrical supply wire. This has been found to increase the reliability and operating life of conventional pressure molding systems.

    • A nozzle assembly for use in injection molding comprises a pair of spacers acting between the manifold and either a cover plate or a hot runner plate of an injection molding machine to apply a contact pressure between the nozzle body melt channel and the manifold melt channel to achieve a seal therebetween. The resilience of the spacers result in an increased operational temperature range for the nozzle assembly, the contact pressure being generated and/or maintained over the range of the operational temperatures. An additional advantage is provided in that the nozzle assembly is compact and can be closely spaced with similar nozzle assemblies to achieve center spacings as small as eight millimeters. The assemblies can be mounted and/or removed from the cavity of the manifold plate, and/or changing of the nozzle heater elements, without requiring removal of the mold from the injection mold machine. In one embodiment, the nozzle assemblies can be removed or mounted by removing a cover plate from the manifold plate, the cover plate being capable of retaining multiple nozzle assemblies in place. In another embodiment, the nozzle assembly has a mounting flange and one or more bolts extend through the and engage the manifold plate and these bolts allow mounting and removal of the nozzle assembly.
