    • An injection molding machine is provided that includes a manifold for distributing plastic melt flow to one or more mold cavities. The manifold has a flow channel having an output orifice surrounded by a lower outside surface, and is expandable upon heating. The injection molding machine also includes a nozzle comprising a body mounted in a receiving aperture in a stationary housing aligned with a gate to a mold cavity, the body having a central bore for delivering plastic melt flow from the channel in the manifold to the mold cavity, the body having an upper surface for engaging with the lower surface of the manifold. The body has a lip member comprising an outer leg circumferentially spaced from an inner body section of the body, the outer leg having a surface mounted against a mounting surface of a stationary housing. The manifold is mounted adjacent to the stationary housing and the nozzle is mounted in or on the stationary housing such that the upper surface of the body of the nozzle faces the lower surface of the manifold for engagement therewith. The lower surface of the manifold engages the upper surface of the body of the nozzle under compression, the outer leg of the lip member being compressed by the compression between the engaged upper surface of the body and the lower surface of the manifold.

    • A sealing arrangement between hot runner components includes a sealing component positioned between a first hot runner component and a second hot runner component having a molding material channel extending therebetween. The sealing component includes an opening through which the molding material channel extends. The sealing component is received in a bore in the second hot runner component such that a portion of the sealing component projects beyond the second hot runner component to create a gap between the first hot runner component and the second hot runner component. The sealing component has a hardness that is greater than a hardness of the second hot runner component and less than a hardness of the first hot runner component. Further, the sealing component has a coefficient of thermal expansion that is proximate to a coefficient of thermal expansion of the second hot runner component.

    • An apparatus for injecting plastic material comprises a manifold having a melt channel and a flat sealing surface, and a nozzle assembly seated directly against the flat sealing surface. The nozzle assembly includes a nozzle body having an axial channel aligned, in use, with the melt channel in the manifold for communicating a flow of material therein. The nozzle body has a non-flat sealing surface adjacent the flat sealing surface, thereby forming a sealing interface to seal the nozzle body with the manifold. The flat sealing surface may be on an end of a bushing mounted into the manifold. The non-flat surface may have a conical profile, preferably defined by an angle less than one degree, and preferably between 0.2 to 0.4 degrees, from a plane parallel to the flat sealing surface. The non-flat surface may have a spherical profile, preferably having a radius between 350 mm and 4000 mm.

    • The present invention relates to an improved nozzle-manifold assembly having utility in injection molding machines for making molded plastic articles. The nozzle assembly employs a clamp ring to apply a clamping force to the nozzle housing to cause it to mate with a manifold so as to prevent leakage of molten plastic material between the nozzle housing and the manifold. The clamp ring is mounted to the manifold by a plurality of screws whose tightening creates the desired clamping force and an effective seal between the nozzle housing and the manifold. The nozzle-manifold assembly also includes a centering ring for positioning the nozzle housing within a bore in a mold plate.

    • A heated manifold system for use in the distribution of heated plastic resins to the various cavities of injection molds for thermoplastic materials. The manifold main structure consists of modular components of similar cross-section that are nested into each other by employing similar slots cut out at the points of intersection of the components. The thermoplastic resin passages are bored longitudinally in each modular component; transverse bores at each intersection provide resin passages between the longitudinal bores. The system includes heated nozzles which have slots to receive cartridge heaters and heater covers, also spring clips to retain the covers and heaters, which can rotate around the shank of the nozzle to allow easy replacement of the cartridge heaters in the event of failure. Internal sealed liquid-filled channels or highly conductive metal rods are used to equalize the temperature of the nozzle from one extremity to the other.
