摘要： The invention provides a passive fluidics circuit for directing different fluids to a common volume, such as a reaction chamber or flow cell, without intermixing or cross contamination. The direction and rate of flow through junctions, nodes and passages of the fluidics circuit are controlled by the states of upstream valves (e.g. opened or closed), differential fluid pressures at circuit inlets or upstream reservoirs, flow path resistances, and the like. Free diffusion or leakage of fluids from unselected inlets into the common outlet or other inlets at junctions or nodes is prevented by the flow of the selected inlet fluid, a portion of which sweeps by the inlets of unselected fluids and exits the fluidics circuit by waste ports, thereby creating a barrier against undesired intermixing with the outlet flow through leakage or diffusion. The invention is particularly advantageous in apparatus for performing sensitive multistep reactions, such as pH-based DNA sequencing reactions.

摘要： A removable secondary liquid dispensing module for use with an existing, automated liquid handling system that defines a work area having a plurality of discrete work stations. Each of the work stations of the automated liquid handling system includes a lab ware site and alignment structure enabling the removable securing standardized microtiter-plates at respective lab ware site. A plate positioning mechanism is configured to move and position the microtiter plates to and from the lab ware sites of the respective work stations thereof and into engagement with the respective carrier alignment structure thereof. Further, a primary liquid dispensing device is configured for selective contact-type dispensing of discrete quantities of fluid, in the range of about one (1) microliter to about ten (10) milliliters, into the test sites of the microtiter plates secured in the respective alignment structure of the respective work station. The removable secondary liquid dispensing module includes a base member dimensioned to fit substantially within a footprint of a work station, and mounting hardware adapted to removably secure the base member in the work station. A support platform is affixed to the base member, and is configured to support a microtiter-plate. An alignment mechanism is configured to removably receive and secure the a microtiter-plate therein by the plate positioning mechanism of the automated liquid handling system. The support platform and alignment mechanism cooperate to form and provide a lab ware site suitable for secured receipt of a microtiter-plate. The secondary liquid dispensing module further includes a secondary liquid dispensing device which is self-contained and operationally independent from the primary liquid dispensing device. The secondary dispensing device is further adapted for selective non-contact-type dispensing of discrete quantities of fluid, in the range of about one (1) nanoliter to about ten (10) microliters, into the test sites of the microtiter-plate.

摘要： The invention relates to an apparatus for the conduct of chemical reactions, comprising: a reaction slider in which are formed a multiplicity of through holes serving as reaction chambers, a selector slider located on the upper surface of the reaction slider and having at least one continuous control orifice, wherein the selector slider is movable relative to the reaction slider in such a way that its control orifice may be brought into alignment with one of the reaction chambers of the reaction slider, so that a through connection to supply the reaction chamber with a predetermined reagent may be made, and a chemical slider, located beneath the reaction slider and provided with passages to supply chemicals to the individual reaction chambers of the reaction slider. The invention is distinguished on the one hand by a device to apply a predetermined force to the sliders and on the other hand by a valve assembly by means of which chemicals may be supplied to the chemical slider in premixed form.

摘要： A hybrid valve apparatus for use with an aspiration actuator and a dispensing actuator to transfer fluid from a reservoir to a test site on a substrate surface. The hybrid valve includes a valve assembly movable between an aspiration condition and a dispensing condition, and a manifold device coupled to the valve assembly. The manifold device includes a fluid aspiration conduit having a first aspiration port in fluid communication with the aspiration actuator. On an opposite end of the aspiration conduit is a second aspiration port in selective fluid communication with the valve assembly to selectively aspirate a liquid sample slug from the reservoir into a discrete sample path when the valve assembly is in the aspiration condition. The manifold device further includes a fluid dispensing conduit having a first dispensing port in fluid communication with the dispensing actuator, and a second dispensing port in selective fluid communication with the valve assembly. When the valve assembly is in the dispensing condition, the sample path is fluidly coupled to the dispensing actuator to selectively dispense at least one droplet of the liquid sample slug therefrom, while simultaneously being out of fluid communication with the aspiration actuator. In contrast, in the aspiration condition, the sample path is in fluid communication with the aspiration actuator, while being out of fluid communication with the dispensing actuator.

摘要： An injection device is arranged and constructed to simultaneously rotate a needle during its forward translation as a therapeutic agent such as a liquid is ejected therefrom. In one embodiment the injection device is an automatic device including a pump forcing the liquid through a tube to a hand-piece. The needle has a first position in which it is disposed within a housing of the hand-piece, and a second position in which the needle extends outwardly of the hand-piece so that it can be used to eject the liquid, with the needle being automatically uni- or bi-directionally rotated as it is advanced between the first and second positions. In an alternate positions a syringe is provided with a barrel, a plunger extending into the barrel to eject the liquid through the needle, and a plunger which is pushed into the barrel by the operator.

摘要： The present invention discloses an apparatus and method for rapid synthesis and analysis of members of a combinatorial library. The apparatus includes a plurality of vessels for containing individual library members and a fluid handling system that apportions a test fluid about equally between each of the vessels. This allows for simultaneous screening of library members by detecting changes in test fluid following contact with individual library members. Fluid flow through each of the vessels is controlled using passive flow restrictors or active flow controllers to ensure that each library member contacts approximately the same amount of test fluid per unit time. The disclosed apparatus and method is especially useful for making inorganic oxide mixtures and for screening the mixtures based on their ability to catalyze the conversion of fluid reactants.

摘要： A polynucleotide synthesizer comprises a supply mechanism for supplying a) liquid reactants for synthesizing peptides or polynucleotides, b) liquid reagents that assist in the synthesis, and c) a wash liquid; a reactor column; a connecting device for fluidly connecting the supply mechanism with the column; apparatus for positively displacing with gas pressure, liquid reactants and reagents, and wash liquid from the supply mechanism into the connecting device; and a controller connected to the column for allowing liquid to flow under the force of the gas pressure and at a controlled rate, into a temporary storage chamber and for thereafter emptying the chamber. The synthesizer is improved in one aspect in that the controller is fluidly positioned only downstream of the reactor column, and the synthesizer further includes valving preventing flow from the controller back to the column, whereby the column is precluded from contamination by reactants or reagents in the controller, and the controller needs no cleaning to prevent it from contaminating the column.In another aspect the synthesizer further includes a parallel manifold having i) sufficient inlet means to receive either each of the liquid reactants or each of the liquid reagents, ii) a common inlet to receive the wash liquid, and iii) an outlet connected to the connecting device to supply reactant or reagent to the column or to the controller, each of the inlet means including a pair of tandem two-way valves, both of the valves of the pair having a common outlet that feeds into the manifold outlet.
