    • An orthodontic appliance such as a bracket has bonding structure that provides a greater bond strength to the tooth in regions beneath an occlusal edge portion of the base in comparison to regions beneath at least one of a mesial edge portion, distal edge portion and occlusal edge portion of the base. The weaker bond strengths beneath the mesial edge portion, the distal edge portion and/or the gingival edge portion facilitate removal of the appliance by the orthodontist when desired. The higher bond strength beneath the occlusal edge portion is sufficient to securely retain the appliance on the tooth and safely resist the forces normally encountered during orthodontic treatment.

    • A rotatable wheel for removing material from a workpiece has a rigid circumferential surface on which a removable abrasive strip is mounted. The circumferential surface has a transverse slot extending into a cavity within the wheel which is generally covered by a coverplate secured over the cavity. Within the cavity is a first device for engaging the leading end of the strip and a second device for engaging the trailing end of the strip. The first device includes a positioner which is operable to align the first device under an opening in the coverplate to permit insertion or removal of the leading end of the strip. Similarly, the second device includes a locator arm which is operable to align the second device under an opening in the coverplate to permit insertion or removal of the trailing end of the strip. The first device places static tension on the strip, while the second device places dynamic tension on the strip as the wheel is rotated.

    • A digital communications system includes a plurality of master stations communicating with a plurality of terminals over a single communication line which carries a plurality of duplex communication channels, each corresponding to a particular master station. A frequency translator coupling each terminal with the communication line permits the remote station to selectively communicate over any of the channels by translating the frequency of a selected channel to that of the terminal's receiver and by translating the frequency of the terminal's transmitter to that of the selected channel. Upon selection of a particular channel, the terminal's transmitter is disabled for a duration sufficient to allow its receiver to pick up a resynchronization signal periodically sent out by the master station whose channel has been selected. The receiver then enables the transmitter in synchronism with any other terminals using the same channel. The translator employs a pair of multiple frequency oscillators controlled by a counter whose output corresponds to a selected channel. The counter is advanced by a manually operable switch, or alternatively, by a remotely generated digital word.
