    • Method and apparatus providing connection-oriented services for packet switched data communications networks. Directory services include distributed discovery of MAC addresses and protocol alias addresses. Topology services include a link state topology exchange among switches, which provides each switch with a complete topology graph of the network. This enables an access switch receiving a data packet to determine a complete path from a source end system to a destination end system. Another service includes resolution of broadcast frames to unicast frames, in order to reduce the amount of broadcast traffic. Policy restrictions may be applied prior to connection setup. Path determination services enable multiple paths from a source to a destination. Connection management includes source routed mapping of connections on the desired path. A distributed call rerouting service is provided wherein if a link on an active path fails, each switch receives a topology change notification and unmaps any connection involving the failed link. A broadcast/unknown service provides restricted flooding of nonresolvable packets. Furthermore, connection-oriented switching is provided based on the source and destination MAC addresses as a connection identifier. Still further, resolution of networks outside the switch domain is enabled by access switches listening for network and server route advertisements and maintaining best routes to said netowrks and servers. The best route metrics may be combined with best path metrics to determine a path from a first access switch to an egress switch connected to the external network.

    • Apparatus and method for learning current network behavior and predicting future behavior which utilizes a state transition graph (40). The graph includes nodes (41-46) which represent network states, and arcs (48) which represent trends in observable network parameters that result in a transition from a current state to another state. For example, a watch service may be instituted on multiple ports of a router (3, 4), and the observed network traffic on the ports over time may be transformed into a state transition graph that represents network behavior. The network states may be labeled such as "good", or "bad", etc., according to a predetermined performance criteria. Once a state transition graph is constructed, the system may then monitor the current state and current trends of the network parameters in order to predict and display future network states. The system may include an automatic warning signal for alerting a user that the network is headed in the direction of a problematic state.

    • The apparatus (10) includes a network monitor (22) coupled to the communications network (8) and providing numeric data representative of at least one operating parameter of the communications network. A fuzzifier module (26) is coupled to the network monitor (22) and converts the numeric data into fuzzy input data. A fuzzy inference engine (28) is coupled to the fuzzifier module and processes the fuzzy input data according to at least one fuzzy rule to provide fuzzy output data representative of control actions to effect a desired state of the communications network. A defuzzifier module (46) is coupled to the fuzzy inference engine (28) and converts the fuzzy output data into numeric data which may be then used by a network controller to control at least one network parameter in response to the output data. The apparatus may also include a user interface (34) and a display (44) to allow the fuzzy input data, and the fuzzy output data to be displayed to a user. Using the user inferface (34), the user can then modify the fuzzy input data, the fuzzy output data, and the fuzzy rules. A method for monitoring and controlling communications networks is also disclosed. A methodology for designing membership functions and fuzzy rules useful for monitoring and control of communications networks is disclosed. The system provides for reporting of network behavior in common sense terms, providing recommendations to a user regarding network operational parameters, and, in one embodiment, complete automatic monitoring and control network operational parameters.

    • A network management system includes a user interface (10), a virtual network (12) and a device communication manager (14). The virtual network (12) includes models (130-135) which represent network entities (30-35) and model relations which represent relations between network entities. Each model (130-135) includes network data relating to a corresponding network entity (30-35) and one or more inference handlers for processing the network data to provide user information. The system can poll or communicate with certain network entities (510, 520, 530, 540, 550) and can infer the status of network connector and other entities (500) for which polling is impossible or impractical. The system performs a fault isolation technique wherein the fault status of the network device is suppressed when it is determined that the device is not defective. User displays include hierarchical location views and topological views of the network configuration. Network devices are represented on the displays by multifunction icons (330, 332, 334) which permit the user to select additional displays showing detailed information regarding different aspects of the corresponding network device.
