    • Methods and apparatus for non-invasively verifying human identities using near-infrared spectroscopy. Near-infrared tissue spectra can be obtained by projecting near-infrared radiation into skin on the underside of human forearms and capturing the light reflected back and out through the tissue. The tissue spectrum collected preferably includes primarily diffuse reflected light reflected from the inner dermis. Multiple tissue spectra and identities can be collected from individuals for whom identity verification may later be desired. The tissue spectra for each individual can be analyzed on a computer, and the spectra for each individual clustered or classified together using tools such as linear discriminant analysis. A target individual seeking identity verification can submit both a purported identity and a near-infrared tissue spectrum for analysis through near-infrared spectroscopy of the forearm. Similarity between the target spectrum and the multiple spectra for the purported identity in the spectral database is determined and identify verified or not verified based on the degree of similarity.

    • An automated dispenser for liquid and pulverulent materials dispenses the materials into a container located below a dispense head. The container is supported by a shelf extending in front of the dispenser. The shelf is divided into sections, with the section located below the dispense head being mounted for raising and lowering toward and away from the dispense head. A scissors lift mechanism supports the center shelf portion, and a locking arrangement at the bottom of the scissors lift mechanism locks the lift mechanism at a desired height. A foot pedal releases the locking arrangement, permitting the shelf portion to be moved to a different height.

    • An apparatus for mixing liquid paint colorant in a plurality of containers. Flexible cables are rotated about their length by a drive motor to rotate agitators in each container. The cable ends which drive the agitators are aligned with the rotational axes of the agitators. Each container has an open upper end which is closed by a cover having an attached mechanism for imparting rotation from the cables to the agitators. The agitators are disabled by disengaging one end of the cable from the drive motor, disengaging the other end of the cable from the mechanism on the container cover, or removing the cover with the cable intact to separate the mechanism from the agitator. The cables are bowed in an inverted U-shape between the drive motor and container covers. A lid extends over the bowed cables and has a rim that bears against the container covers to maintain them in closed position on the container during operation.

    • A method of preventing snails from reaching the upper portion of the plant or tree utilizes a device which bars access to leaves and fruit subject to attack from the snails. Embodiments of the device utilized in the method have an inner funnel-shaped sleeve which biases against the tree trunk to provide a sufficiently tight closure to prevent snails from climbing between the trunk and the device. Embodiments of the device have a downward facing surface having a plurality of closely-spaced downwardly facing spike members. These spike members are sufficiently closely spaced so as to substantially or completely prevent snails, including small-sized young snails, from moving across the downwardly facing surface to crawl around the outside of the device to gain access to the upper portion of the tree.

The arm includes a proximal end pivotally coupled to the sidewall and a distal end coupled to a push plate. The closure system also includes a bracket for supporting a cup and a spring-biased seal. The bracket is coupled to the arm and slidably coupled the sidewall by a pin that extends from the bracket through the lateral slot in the sidewall.
