    • An optical transmission/reception system includes a modulator for modulating light based on data to output signal light; a transmission-side signal processor performing transmission-side digital signal processing which imparts a polarization change to the signal light by the optical modulation with respect to an input signal; an optical transmitter in which the modulator performs the optical modulation based on the input signal subjected to the transmission-side digital signal processing in the transmission-side signal processor; and an optical receiver including a converter converting the signal light inputted from the optical transmitter via a transmission path to a digital electric signal for each polarization component, and a reception-side signal processor performing reception-side digital signal processing which imparts a polarization change having a property substantially inverse to a property of the polarization change in the transmission-side signal processor with respect to the digital electric signal from the converter.

    • A multi-level modulation receiving device for adaptively compensating for chromatic dispersion and polarization mode dispersion with high precision. Each equalizing filter has at least one variable parameter as a weight therefor and equalizes the waveform of a corresponding channel signal in accordance with an averaged variable parameter value. A signal quality monitor monitors the signal quality of the filter output signal, and a variable parameter value calculator calculates a variable parameter value to be set as the variable parameter, in accordance with the signal quality. A variable parameter averaging unit averages the variable parameter values calculated for respective channels, to generate an averaged variable parameter value, and sends the averaged variable parameter value to the equalizing filters such that the same weight is set in the equalizing filters associated with the n channels.

    • An optical receiving device of the present invention receives optical signals from an optical transmitting device which uses a modulation format wherein an optical intensity waveform of each symbol is return-to-zero (RZ) pulse, and converts the received optical signals into digital signals by a conversion process of an analog to digital (AD) converter. A control-value calculating unit subsequent to the AD converter digitally processes the digital signals, retrieves an absolute value of the digital signals or a value corresponding one-to-one with the absolute value of the digital signals, estimates errors from an appropriate timing of a sampling timing in the AD converter based on the absolute value of the digital signals or the value corresponding one-to-one with the absolute value of the digital signals, and calculates a control value controlling the sampling timing based on the estimated errors. Based on the control value, a phase of a pulse regulating the sampling timing of AD conversion can be compensated.
