    • A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate provided with first and second electrodes, and a second substrate disposed to be opposite to the first substrate via a liquid crystal layer. Regions of pixels each having the first and second electrodes are arranged in a matrix, and the liquid crystal layer is driven by an electric field in an in-plane direction of the first substrate, applied between the first and second electrodes. A step difference is formed at an opposite side of the first substrate for each of the pixel regions. The first or second electrode includes a wall-shaped electrode formed at a side wall surface of the step difference and a planar electrode formed from an edge of the wall-shaped electrode along the main surface of the first substrate. The wall-shaped electrode and the planar electrode are electrically connected to each other.

    • The deterioration (darkness) of image quality due to a reduction in the brightness of a single color as a result of the conversion from RGB pixels to RGBW pixels is prevented and a reduction in the power is achieved. A processing portion for conversion from RGB to RGBW 106 is formed of a W generating circuit 201, which is the same as in the prior art, a sub-pixel rendering circuit 202, a W intensity calculating portion 203 which transmits a W intensity setting value 205 to a W generating circuit 201, and a low power backlight control circuit 204 which expands data on the basis of the RGBW pixels generated by the sub-pixel rendering portion 202 and lowers the backlight in accordance with the amount by which the data is expanded. The inputted RGB data is used as the RGBW data with the W intensity calculated by the W intensity calculating portion 203. A backlight control signal is generated in accordance with the amount of data expansion in the sub-pixel rendering portion 202.

    • An active matrix type liquid crystal display device driving method for switching a partial display mode and a normal display mode. The respective data lines of the partial display area are scanned in a certain period defined as a frame period, “k” pieces (symbol “k” is integer larger than, or equal to 1) of the partial display areas are present within 1 screen, a common electrode potential is varied 2k times within 1 frame period; a common electrode potential in a partially scanning period for scanning the partial display area is made as a constant potential against a reference of a driving circuit for driving the data lines; and within at least two continued frames, a common electrode potential of a blank period other than the partially scanning period is made as a constant potential which is different from the constant potential in the partially scanning period.
