    • PURPOSE: To obtain a high quality metal product of a higher purity by using cordierite comprising oxides of magnesium, aluminum and silicon as material of a crucible for melting metal to mold it by a casting method. CONSTITUTION: A specified amount of cordierite of high purity comprising oxides of magnesium, aluminum and silicon with a particle size of 0.1-5 μm is mixed with an anion based dispersant, a PVA binder and a defoaming agent as additives to bring the concentration of a slurry to 49-65%. The slurry is cast into a gypsum mold as a water absorbing cast mold so that the moisture of the slurry is absorbed into a mold material. A solid object molded is dried by an air drying at 100 deg.C and baked at 1,300-1,444 deg.C to obtain a crucible with A=40 mm, an inner diameter B=25 mm and a thickness C=3 mm. 150 G of Gold or 300 G of copper is measured to be taken into the crucible, melted at a heating temperature of 1,200-1,300 deg.C by an oxygen-acetylene flame and then, the metal is cast into a mold. This ingot production process is repeated. The crucible made of the cordierite can withstand more than ten times of application as against the crucible made of carbon wearing out under four to five applications.
