    • A multi-player gaming platform includes a large visual display and a plurality of player terminals coupled to the visual display. The visual display indicates a game of chance including a single play field and a plurality of movable game pieces. The game pieces are associated with the respective player terminals. In response to a wager placed at one of the player terminals, the game piece associated with that terminal moves along or near the play field and generates a game outcome. The game outcome may be defined by the game piece itself or where the game piece lands on the play field. The game awards a payoff if the game outcome meets winning criteria. The wager placed at the one of the player terminals is independent of any other wagers placed at the other player terminals and is independent of when the other wagers are placed. Similarly, the game piece associated with the one of the player terminals operates independent of the game pieces associated with the other player terminals. There is no actual player-to-player interaction—the players merely make use of the same play field. Therefore, the gaming platform allows players to join the game of chance at any time and to place wagers, make any necessary selections, and play the game at their own pace.

    • Apparatus, systems, and methods may operate to load a software program which, when executed by a processor, is associated with presenting a wagering game upon which monetary value may be wagered. The software program may be loaded into a non-volatile memory in the form of phase-change random access memory, nanotube random access memory, or a combination thereof, and executed by the processor to present the wagering game after conducting a first preliminary authentication. Upon entering a reset cycle, a subsequent preliminary authentication of the software program is conducted without reloading the non-volatile memory, and the program is executed from the non-volatile memory by the processor while a background full authentication of the software program stored in mass storage is conducted. Execution out of the non-volatile memory is halted if the background full authentication fails.

    • Methods and systems for assigning addresses to peripheral devices in wagering game machines are described herein. In one embodiment, a method includes transmitting a first request in a wagering game machine, wherein the first request is addressed to a configuration address, and wherein the wagering game machine is configured to present wagering games upon which monetary value can be wagered. The method can also include detecting a first response to the first request, the first response originating from a first of a plurality of peripheral devices of the wagering game machine. The method can also include assigning a first address to the first of the plurality of peripheral devices and notifying the first of the peripheral devices about the first address.
