    • PURPOSE:To prevent the change of a chucking condition due to thermal expansion by providing a spring for energizing a chucking claw to converge toward the inner side of a chuck for holding a glass rod and the like via the shift of a collet having a plurality of chucking claws in an axial direction. CONSTITUTION:Even when a normal temperature condition has changed to a high temperature condition and the whole of a chucked workpiece, a chuck proper 11, a collet 12 and the like has given thermal expansion, thereby forming a gap between the tapered surface 15 of a chucking claw 14 and the chuck proper 11, the chucking claw 14 is pushed upward with a thermal expansion absorption spring 16 and, therefore, a chucking condition is properly maintained. Thereafter, in transition from high temperature to low temperature, thermal expansion takes place. As a removable spring 17 on the rear end of the collet 12 tends to lower the collet 12, however, the force of the thermal expansion absorption spring 16 is released by rotating and loosening a rotary member 13. And the collet 12 is pushed downward and the chucking claw 14 expands toward the outside, thereby preventing the occurrence of an excessive chucking force.

    • PURPOSE:To easily dehydrate and sinter a long-sized base material by reciprocating the base material to uniformly heat the material, and leaving a furnace core tube alone long-sized when the porous optical fiber base material is longer than the soaking zone in the furnace core tube. CONSTITUTION:The soaking zone Z is heated 20 and kept at a desired temp., the porous optical fiber base material 16 is fixed by a rotary chuck 18 through a seed rod 17, and then the base material 16 is lowered until its lower end reaches a site directly above the zone Z. Under such conditions, the temp. of the zone Z is then increased to a specified temp., and the gaseous mixture of He and Cl2, for example, is supplied 21 and discharged 22. The base material 16 is repeatedly reciprocated under such conditions. In such case, when the material is lowered to the lowermost position of a zone Z, the upper end of the base material 16 is positioned below the upper end of the zone Z. Meanwhile, when the material 16 is raised to the uppermost position, the lower end of the base material 16 is positioned above the lower end of the zone Z. Accordingly, the reciprocating stroke quantity of the base material 16 is set at more than a value obtained by subtracting the length of the zone Z from the length of the base material 16. Consequently, a high-quality base material 16 with much less air bubbles than in case of the conventional method can be obtained.
