Materials for making alcohol; mashing processes.-In treating potatoes to obtain alcohol and food for animals, the potatoes are cut into slices, and the slices are washed with a diastase solution at a temperature of about 70‹ C., at which the starch is converted into paste and is then saccharified by the diastase. The slices are pressed and dried to form food for animals. The liquors are united and fermented. In a modification, the slices are washed first with cold water to separate the starch on the surface, and this is subsequently added to the diastase liquor.

Starch. - To extract starch from potatoes, they are reduced to chips or fine slices or the like, instead of being pulped, and these are washed with potato juice in its natural state or more or less concentrated, only a partial extraction of starch being attained or aimed at. The resulting highly concentrated liquor is used for enriching the end product, a nutritious food-stuff being stated to be so obtaiaed. Only the starch granules belonging to the uncovered cells on the surfaces of the chips pass into the washing juice-that is, not more than 40 per cent, and preferably only 33 per cent, of the starch present depending upon the thickness of the chips and quantity of juice employed. The starch is separated as usual by precipitation or filtration. The juice is extracted from the partly extracted chips in presses or the like, and is used repeatedly for washing the chips. The surplus juice thus introduced is removed after deprivation of suspended starch. In a modification, evaporated concentrated juice, which can first be deprived of its albumen as usual, is employed for washing out the starch, giving an enriched food-stuff. From a slicing-machine a the chips or slices enter the hopper b of a tank c to be mixed, preferably by an agitator, with relatively large quantities of washing-juice supplied through a pipe e from a pump m. From the other end of the tank c the chips are carried by a conveyer f to a press p, the juice running back through the sieve bottom s of the conveyer. The juice squeezed out in the press p is also run back through a channel q to the tank e. The juice passes from the tank c through an overflow pipe i to a depulper j, and thence to a starch-separating apparatus k of any suitable construction. The-separated juice is then drawn off through a pipe l by the pump m and returned to the front end of the tank c. Surplus juice overflows through a pipe o to, for example, an evaporating-battery &c. The pressed potato material passes away from the press p through a gutter t. Ordinary sifting-drums, shaking sieves, or the like may be used with washing- juice, repeatedly used, instead of the mixing-tank for washing the starch from the chips.

Food preparations.-Saccharine food-stuffs are prepared by treating beet-root, or the residue left after extracting beet-root juices, or unpeeled beetroot, or the leaves or other portions of beet, with a large quantity of hot inspissated beet-root juices or syrups or molasses or mixtures of the same with other nutritious liquids or fats &c., thereby equalizing the concentration of the added liquid and the juices in the beet. The mixture is then disintegrated in a suitable press, and the liquid is expressed. The solid residue can than be dried by steam or gas, in any ordinary drying appliance, and used as a food, the liquid being concentrated in vacuo and used to treat fresh quantities of beet-root.

摘要： 13,512. Steffen, C. July 27. Vapour turbines. -The waste heat of steam engines, furnaces, &c. is used to evaporate sulphurous acid, and the vapours so produced are used to drive turbines. A suitably-shaped evaporator a contains liquid sulphurous acid, which is heated by hot gases or other source of waste heat passed through the tubular heater c. The vapours drive the turbine e, and are condensed in a condenser g and then returned to the evaporator. Two such arrangements can be combined together. The evaporator and condenser may be fitted with pipes arranged in coils.

Steam generation, methods of.-Relates to a process of generating steam and vapour under pressure whereby the liquid is heated under a pressure above that corresponding to its boiling-point at the desired working pressure, being withdrawn from a vessel at a temperature corresponding to the boiling-point at working pressure and returned thereto. The returning steam or vapour and liquid works a motor, which withdraws the liquid and forces it through the heater. Fig. 1 shows an arrangement of steam-generating plant. The vessel a is maintained at a working pressure and at a temperature corresponding to the boiling point at that pressure. Water is withdrawn by the centrifugal pump d and delivered to the vessel b, which is at the same temperature as a but under higher pressure. Thence the liquid passes through the heater e, and is returned through a loaded valve g to the vessel a, where steam is disengaged, and where it operates, as it enters, the turbine wheel f. A connection is provided at c between the vessels a and b, through which return circulation is effected during the starting of the apparatus. An external motor and pump may replace the motor wheel f and pump d, and both may be of the reciprocating type. Feedwater is supplied through a heater to the vessel b by the pump h.
