Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] A jet propulsion unit is characterized by the provision of a jet deflecting device comprising a plurality of guide vanes extending outside the normal flow path of the jet and spaced therealong and controllable means for urging said jet towards said vanes, and a device for varying the area of said nozzle comprising fluid-injecting means opening into said jet in a generally crosswise direction with respect thereto at the periphery of said jet and upstream of said vanes, said fluid injecting means being designed for forming a transverse screen-like jet adapted to reduce the effective area of said nozzle and to urge the boundary layers of said jet clear of said vanes. The exhaust nozzle 35 carries deflector baffles 43 and a centrally disposed body 38 formed with outwardly and rearwardly directed orifices 40, 41 supplied with gas under pressure through a valve - 44, whereby the exhaust stream may be diverted outwardly to pass through the baffles 43. An additional orifice 36 extends circumferentially round an annular chamber 36a also supplied with pressure gas through a valve 45, whereby the exhaust stream may be contracted and, when orifices 40 and 41 are inoperative, prevented from spreading outwardly into contact with the rearmost baffles 43. Specifications 696,088 [Group XXXIII], 745,630 and 750,601 are referred to.

    • 750,601. Jet propulsion nozzles. SOC. NATIONALE D'ETUDE ET DE CONSTRUCTION DE MOTEURS D'AVIATION. May 10, 1951 [June 16, 1950], No. 11054/51. Class 110(3) [Also in Group XXXIII] In a jet propulsion engine having an air compressor for example a jet turbine engine, a device is provided for deflecting the jet stream towards flow guiding means arranged laterally of the jet stream. Auxiliary nozzle means open into the main jet stream opposite the flow guiding means and are adapted to form a screen-like fluid obstacle when supplied with air under pressure from the engine compressor which causes the main jet stream to be deflected towards the flow guiding means. In Fig. 2 the downstream portion 49 of the jet nozzle is movable so that when in the extended position shown in the upper half of the Figure an annular orifice 48 is formed. A hollow faired member 45 is supported at the centre of the jet nozzle by struts 46 and when it is desired to deflect the jet stream, air is supplied from the engine compressor through the pipe 46a and issues through the nozzle 47 in the member 45 and causes the jet stream to be deflected through the lateral orifice 48. In Fig. 4 a hollow faired member 53 extends across the downstream end of the jet nozzle which is of rectangular section and air under pressure issues through the slots 54. Flap members 55 are pivotally mounted at the downstream end of the jet nozzle and when in the operative position shown at the upper half of Fig. 4 form a curved path for the deflected jet stream. The deflection of the jet stream may be assisted by applying suction to the slots 58 in the pivoted flaps. In Fig. 8 a hollow faired member 53 is mounted vertically in the jet nozzle and the deflected jet stream issues through lateral orifices 13, 13a which are provided with curved deflector vanes 44. In other embodiments retractable solid deflector members are provided in addition and cause deflection of the jet stream if the deflection caused by the jet of air under pressure is insufficient. Specifications 691,302, 691, 984 [Group XXXIII] and 750, 623 are referred to.
