    • 14,184. Smith, G. June 18. Stop-motions, weft.-The front portion of a weft-hammer is permanently or detachably hinged or pivoted to the rear portion, so that it normally occupies its working position but yields to an obstruction. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the front part B is slotted so that it may be pivoted to a projection c on the rear part C, and has an abutment b adapted, when the hammer is in its normal position, to engage a stop c on the projection c. The outer parts b of the part B are shaped to engage circular recesses c in the rear part. In a modification, the front part B is formed with on eye b , Figs. 6 and 7, adapted to engage a boss c on the rear part, to which it is secured by means of retaining-plate and screw e, the front part of the hammer being held in its normal position by means of a projection b adapted to engage a stop. In further modifications, the front part may be slidably mounted on the rear part, or it may comprise a blade spring under pressure. The invention may be applied to existing hammers by means of a socket adapted to be bolted to the shank after the hammer head has been removed.

    • 4653. Smith, G., and Bausche, F. Feb. 26. Door-opening apparatus.-Relates to an electromagnetic apparatus for unlocking and then opening a door. The bar 9 is connected at one end to the framework by the chain 7, Figs. 1 and 3, and is subject to the action of springs 25, 28, which are of unequal strength. A lever 30, pivoted at 29 to the casing 1 secured to the door, passes between the loose collars 24, 26 of the springs, and its end 31 is attached by means of the chain 4 to the handle of the lock. Fig. 3 shows the device when the door is closed, the spring 25 being then under compression. On completion of the electric circuit by means of the switch 20, the cores 38 of the electro magnet 16 attract the lever 36 and release the lever 35 from the catch 39 and the lever 30 from the catch 35. Under the action of the spring 25, the lever 30 is urged to one side, withdrawing the bolt and compressing the spring 28, which, acting on the sliding bar 9, opens the door, the detent mechanism being again brought into engagement. As the door is closed, the bar 9 is moved to compress the spring 25. The device may be used for a group of doors.
