    • PURPOSE:To make the axially-symmetrical molecule orienting characteristic of a liquid crystal element utilizable by orienting liquid crystal molecules in such a way that on one substrate of the liquid cell the molecules are oriented with their major axes arranged in one direction and on the other substrate the molecules are oriented with their major axes arranged concentrically or radially. CONSTITUTION:After performing treatment so that liquid crystal molecules can be oriented homogeneously in one direction on the substrate 1 on the incident side and molecules can be oriented concentrically on the substrate 2 on the other side, liquid crystal 4 is enclosed into the liquid crystal cell formed of the base plates 1 and 2 with a spacer in between. When a linearly polarizing plate 5 is placed on the incident side, with the polarizing direction being made coincident with the oriented direction of the liquid crystal molecules, the polarizing direction of the light passed through the liquid crystal cell becomes the oriented direction of the molecules on the light emitting side, namely, concentric. On the other hand, when the polarizing direction of the polarizing plate 5 is turned to the direction perpendicular to the major-axis direction of the homogeneously-oriented liquid crystal molecules on the incident-side base plate 1, a radially polarized output is obtained. Therefore, an axially- symmetrical (centrally-symmetrical), such as concentric, radial, etc., polarizing characteristic can be obtained with a simple constitution.

    • PURPOSE:To obtain the variable coupling type optical fiber coupler which easily control the quantity of light entering an optical fiber according to the level of an impressed voltage by utilizing a microlens array made of liquid crystal whose light convergence characteristics can be varied with the voltage. CONSTITUTION:When a voltage is applied between upper and lower conductive films 3 and 4, the distribution of the electric field intensity in a liquid crystal cell is as shown by segments in a figure and an irregular electric field is established. Further, when an electric field larger than a threshold value is applied to the liquid crystal, nematic liquid crystal molecules whose dielectric anisotropy is positive receive a force which changing their long-axis directions to the electric field direction. The liquid crystal molecules, on the other hand, are given the effect of an elastic force accompanying strain due to the change in the orientation direction and they are oriented to the position (where energy is minimum) where the electric force and the force based upon the electric field balance with each other. Consequently, the substantial refractive index to incident light which is polarized in the long-axis direction of the liquid crystal molecules vary with the position.

    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device in which the direction of linearly polarized light can be electrically fast rotated and controlled in a simple structure. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal device has a liquid crystal layer 3 sealed between a transparent substrate 2 and a substrate 4 having a punched pattern electrode divided into a plurality of parts by slits. The inner face of one substrate is subjected to intense alignment treatment to align the liquid crystal molecules parallel in one direction to the substrate while the inner face of the other substrate is subjected to the aligning treatment to give weak alignment controlling force. By adding a voltage on divided electrodes such as electrode pairs 4a, 4b or 4c, 4d along the diameter direction of the punched pattern electrode, an effect to twist the alignment of the liquid crystal molecules is induced. Thereby, rotation of the polarization direction of the incident linearly polarized light can be electrically controlled for the incident linearly polarized light having the polarization direction in the uniaxial alignment direction of the liquid crystal molecules.

    • PURPOSE:To conduct the thermal writing, holding, and erasing of information by changing a color of a fluorescence by a method wherein a fluorescent substance which returns to a state of emitting an original color fluorescence after holding a color fluorescence for a fixed time at a temp. lower than a threshold temp. after the multi-color change of the fluorescence is contained on or inside paper. CONSTITUTION:Tb hexafluoroacetylacetonate and Eu hexafluoroacetylacetonate are dissolved in an organic solvent, such as tetrahydrofuran. This solution is applied or infiltrated on/in normal paper and dried to form fluorescent heat- sensitive paper. Namely, by writing information on the fluorescent heat-sensitive paper by a thermal head at a temp. higher than a threshold temp., only a part with the information written emits a red fluorescence, and the other area emits a green fluorescence. This state is held for a fixed time. For erasing the written information, the fluorescent substance is lowered in temp. to return to a state of emitting an original color fluorescence all over the surface. This operation can be easily conducted by passing the fluorescent heat sensitive paper between rollers which are held at a temp. lower than room temp.

    • PURPOSE:To effectively make use of the ground by suspending each main beam by each main sling stretched between suspension main posts, providing a floor board reinforced beams and cross beams below a roof member constructed in such a way that each cross beam is fixed between each side post and each main beam, and thereby forming a space with no post below the floor board. CONSTITUTION:Appropriate paired suspension posts 1 are erected in a structure construction site, slings 3 are hanged down at equal intervals from a main suspension cable 2 stretched between the top sections of the posts 1. And each main beam 4 the both ends of which are fixed onto the main posts 1 is suspended at each lower end of the slings 3. In the second place, a frame work of a roof is formed so that each roof member 7 is stretched in such a way that each side post 5 erected at the both side sections in the construction site is connected with each beam 4 by each cross beam 6, and the respective beams 4 are also connected with each other by the cross beams. Successively, each main beam 4' is provided below each member 7 while the specific height is maintained so as to be connected with each main post 1 so that each floor board 9 is thereby formed. Then, each beam 4 and each main beam 4' are suspended by each suspension pillar 10 at specified intervals so that a huge space 11 with no post is formed below the floor 9. By this constitution, it is possible to make effective use of the ground.
