    • A method and an apparatus for improving power efficiency of a User Equipment (UE) by using channel state information between a Node B and the UE and power headroom information of the UE in a mobile communication system. The method includes acquiring power information in relation to transmission powers of UEs; arranging the UEs in a sequence based on the power information; determining, for each UE according to the arranged sequence, whether a first reception power of a Node B exceeds a second reception power; allocating a resource area including partially consecutive sub-carriers to at least one corresponding UE when the first reception power exceeds the second reception power; allocating a resource area including entirely consecutive sub-carriers to at least one corresponding UE when the first reception power does not exceed the second reception power; and transmitting resource allocation information indicating the allocated resource area to the each UE.

    • An apparatus and method for improving antenna diversity in a receiver of a broadband wireless communication system using multiple antennas are provided. The receiver with the diversity apparatus uses a structure of multiple analog front ends, a structure for measuring antenna-by-antenna reception power values/Carrier-to-Interference plus Noise Ratios (CINRs) after Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) using a single analog front end, and a structure based on a single analog front end for measuring antenna-by-antenna reception power values after Analog-to-Digital (A/D) conversion without use of FFT. When a receive antenna is selected, the measured reception power values/CINRs are used. In a system for transmitting pilot signals with preamble data in a regular pattern, the receiver can have improved performance through a suitable frequency modulation process and can be implemented at low cost, as compared with that of the conventional antenna selection diversity.

    • Provided is a hard handover method in a wireless communication system. The hard handover method includes checking a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a signal received from each of at least one neighboring base station (BS) while in communication with a serving BS, and canceling interference if the SNR of the signal received from each of the at least one neighboring BSs satisfies a select condition; sending a handover request to the serving BS, if a difference between a SNR of the interference-canceled signal and a SNR of the interference signal reaches a handover request threshold; and upon receipt of a handover approval from the serving BS, releasing a communication channel to the serving BS, and connecting a call to a BS that provides an interference signal whose SNR has reached the threshold.
