    • An electrostatic image of binary data representing elements is formed on a particular electrophotographic member disclosed and claimed in U.S. Pat. No. 4,025,339. The electrostatic image is toned and the toned image is transferred to a storage medium. The storage medium is in the form of an extended length of dual-layer transparent synthetic resin material. One of the layers has a softening range of temperature less than the substrate. At the transfer, the one layer is heated and the toned image is pressed into the one layer. The storage medium carrying the toned image then is wound up on a storage or take-up spool while fresh medium is fed from a supply spool. The two spools are carried by a housing and the housing, spools and medium form an optical mass memory cassette. Reading of the data occurs by deflecting rays of light across the medium and the light that is transmitted through and blocked by the medium is sensed in bar sensors, one for each ray. The rays are deflected across the medium in a pattern similar to the pattern used for imaging the electrophotographic member. The electrical signals from the sensors are used to produce binary data representing the data stored on the medium.The data stored in the optical memory cassette is unaffected by magnetic and electric fields and light energy, a tremendous quantity of data can be stored on a relatively small length of storage medium, and the storage medium is inexpensive so that it may be discarded when the data is obsolete.

    • An apparatus and method for making copies of an original pattern through the use of electrostatic techniques in which there is a looped belt having an exterior photoconductive layer. The bottom reach of the belt is charged and imaged by the projected pattern in darkness to acquire a latent image progressively as the belt moves in one direction. The belt passes a toning station where a toning roller dipping into a sump picks up toner and rolls the toner onto the latent image to develop the same as the belt passes through the station. The roller protrudes into the belt loop past the plane of the bottom reach thereby requiring the belt to be wrapped around a peripheral segment of the toning roller, giving several advantages. After toning the developed image passes around to the upper belt reach and is transferred by pressure to a carrier medium at the end of the upper reach.

    • A low-profile electrophotographic copying machine employing an electrophotographic imaging system including an electrophotographic belt transportable through plural work stations at which the belt is charged, exposed to a projected image to establish a latent image, developed with suitable toner and optionally transferred to a carrier medium from a source thereof and fixed. The apparatus is housed so as to maximize conservation of space and to minimize the vertical dimension thereof. The belt has closely proximate reaches horizontally oriented and parallel except at the developing station. The apparatus uses a folded optical projection system whereby the image from a horizontally arranged document on a platen is projected by way of a pair of oppositely inclined mirrors through an intermediate lens system to the lower reach of the electrophotographic belt, which is positioned at about the same level as the platen. The developing station is disposed in the neck of the projection system between the expanded beams of the projection system.

    • Sputtering apparatus in which a substrate passes through a sputtering chamber in a continuous rectilinear movement. The chamber is formed in a coffer-like vessel which has a closure and a body that are brought together into a sealing engagement to form the chamber. There is an air lock at opposite ends of the coffer for the substrate to enter and leave.The sputtering conditions are provided by suitable gases, pumps, electrical connections and the like, these being admitted or led into the chamber. Electrode pairs are provided, one of each pair being mounted on the closure the other in the body to give good access thereto. The one mounted on the closure may be the anode and the other the cathode or vice versa. The sputtering is carried on with r.f. power.The closure may be hinged.For sputtering selectively, masks may be interposed between the targets and the anodes. Such masks will result in strip sputtering.Especially for sputtering on substrates which are heat-sensitive, magnetic fields can be established in the sputtering gaps to sweep electrons out of the gap and prevent their impinging against the critical parts of the substrate.Roller or drive systems may be provided in the coffer along with other apparatus.

    • A photoconductive coating which comprises a crystalline deposit of a wholly inorganic material, in the preferred form comprising cadmium sulfide, of almost perfect stoichiometry, either with or without small amounts of dopant.The coating is deposited on a suitable substrate such as a thin, clear, flexible polyester sheet with an intervening layer of ohmic material such as indium-tin oxide in a sputtering method that results in unusual properties. The deposit can be made on metal substrates if desired, but the greater utility is in its application to a transparent substrate so that a transparent electrophotographic member is formed suitable for many uses.Two important properties worthy of mention are that the coating is such that a charge density may be maintained on its surface (surface charge) which is ten to one hundred times greater than known photoconductive coatings and that there is no photoconductive fatigue.The photoconductive coating of the invention comprises depositing the coating in a vacuum chamber by sputtering with R.F. energy in such a manner that the deposit is crystalline, with the individual crystals oriented substantially vertically, the size of the crystals being uniform and hexagonal in configuration and of the order of 700 to 800 Angstroms in diameter and with a barrier layer coating on the surface that is of extreme resistivity, each crystal acting independently as an independent field domain, the crystal length normal to the substrate being the same as the coating thickness and the deposit evidencing single crystal configuration in response to diffraction pattern measurements.

    • A flexible offset printing plate is formed from a directly imaged electrophotographic member comprising an inorganic coating of a photoconductive material on a polyester substrate. The photoconductive material is an oriented crystalline deposit about 3000 Angstroms thick which has been directly sputtered with radiofrequency energy in a process using a Langmuir sheath to produce a light sensitive, readily imaged abrasion-resistant, transparent coating. It is deposited on a sheet of dimensionally stable, transparent polyester film having a thickness of about 0.005 inch with an intervening sandwiched layer of ohmic material such as indium-tin oxide about 300 Angstroms thick. The transparency of the ohmic layer and the photoconductive coating on a transparent substrate result in a transparent plate.The electrophotographic member is imaged by charging, exposure and toning with a suitable toner. The non-imaged parts of the surface are rendered hydrophilic (having a strong affinity for water and repellant to greasy ink) by suitable chemical and/or mechanical treatment while the imaged and toned parts are rendered hydrophobic (water-repellant and having a strong affinity for greasy ink). This may simply comprise choosing a type of toner which is inherently hydrophobic. The plate is mounted in an offset press and printing effected as though it were a conventional offset plate using the usual grease- or oil-based inks.

The sputtering operation is arranged to apply a highly uniform coating of a photoconductive material on the substrate and the structure is arranged so that the finished cylinder can be removed from the sputtering chamber along with the mandrel and replaced by another metal cylindrical substrate on another mandrel. In this way a printing cylinder comprising a seamless thin-walled metal sleeve having a coating of photoconductive material is easily produced economically and rapidly, said coating having uniform thickness and properties throughout.

    • A method and apparatus for the deposition of a thin film on a substrate in which a length of the substrate such as for example, flexible plastic film, is transported in a path which follows along a convoluted configuration through a pressure vessel and therein is subjected to deposition effects. Such deposition effects, for example, comprise high frequency sputtering plasma. The helical path is arranged so that the substrate is carried through the influence of the deposition effects a plurality of times and at speeds which are much greater than those of known methods and apparatus. As a result, the deposition of the thin film is more uniform and a high throughput is achieved. Many other advantages are also achieved. In addition to conventional types of cooling, efficient cooling is obtained by magnetically sweeping secondary electrons away from the substrate. Batch and continuous processing are disclosed.
