    • PURPOSE: An optical information material having excellent transparency and small optical strain and suited for excellent optical disc bases, comprising a specified polycarbonate.
      CONSTITUTION: An optical information material comprising a polycarbonate in which units containing at least one pendant aromatic group, for example, units of formula I (wherein X and Y are each H, a 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon or an aromatic hydrocarbon group, at least one of which is an aromatic hydrocarbon, and Z and W are each H or a 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon) are incorporated in carbonate bond-constituting units in an amount of 25W100wt%, based on the total carbonate bond-constituting units. An example of the comonomer unit which may be contained is that of formula II (wherein X', Y', A and B are each H or a 1W6C aliphatic hydrocarbon). This optical information material has excellent transparency and small optical strain, so that it can yield excellent disc bases.

    • PURPOSE: A molding material which can give a plastic molding of excellent optical characteristics such as excellent transparency and particularly small optical strain, comprising a specified polyester carbonate containing a dicarboxylic acid component at a weight ratio in a specified range.
      CONSTITUTION: A molding material comprising a polyester carbonate prepared from 2,2-bis(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propane (hereinafter, referred to as bisphenol A) alone or an aromatic diol compound based thereon [e.g., its mixture with bis(4- hydroxyphenyl)-methane] and a 4W25C aliphatic main chain dicarboxylic acid (e.g., adipic acid) and having a content of this dicarboxylic acid component of 0.01W0.2wt% based on the total polymer. A molding obtained from this molding material has good mechanical properties and excellent transparency and particularly small optical strain even when the molding is prepared under extremely mild molding conditions, so that it is particularly suitable for optical devices and instruments.
