    • 7392. Schmidt, P. April 2, 1908, [Convention date]. Mules and twiners; rollers and roller heads; moistening-apparatus. - The broken ends of rovings are applied to the spindles of self-acting mules by a current of air which is moistened to improve the spinning and to facilitate the production of a finer yarn. On the inward run of the carriage, the broken end 5, Fig. 1, is caught by a needle-bar 11 on the carriage 10 and a second needle-bar 12 on the headstock, and, when stretched tight, is cut by a rotary cutter 14, the loose end being blown by a current of air issuing from pipes 18 over the faller wire on to the spindle. The pipes 18 are carried upon the hub 23 of a shaft 22, and are connected by flexible portions 21 to outlet pipes from a casing 17 which extends the width of the machine and surrounds a rotary fan 15. The bottom of the casing is formed as a trough 34 containing water, and moist air is also supplied through tubes 36 from a pipe 35. Baffles are provided inside the casing 17 to direct the air towards the outlet pipes. The outer ends of the pipes are provided with U-shaped openings, and clearers 26 are mounted upon them to engage the bottom rollers 7. Bell-crank levers are also mounted on the hub 23, the arms 24 of which are weighted, and the arms 27 of which are engaged by slotted weighted arms 29, carrying projections 31 which clear the top rollers. When a fresh roving is being threaded through the rollers, the arms 29 are suspended from the faller 33 by hooks 32.
