摘要： A technique for preventing damage to ball bearings in a small form factor device where the drive motor has at least one crash stop ring disposed about the shaft and inside the rotor of the motor. The crash stop ring is dimensioned to permit only a small amount of movement of the rotor relative to the shaft. The permitted movement must be less than the minimum movement which would cause damage to the elements of the ball bearing. In an alternative embodiment, a rotor includes a flange extending in the radial direction from the rotor. A piezoelectric ring is rigidly mounted on both sides of the flange to engage one of the planar surfaces of the flange when the piezoelectric ring is in the relaxed state. With two such crash stop rings disposed so that the rings can engage both planar surfaces of the flange, the rotor is effectively clamped between the two piezoelectric crash stop rings whenever the piezoelectric crash stop ting is disconnected from the power source used to contract the piezoelectric material in a direction parallel to the axis of rotation of the rotor.

摘要： A suspension for a read/write head of a disk drive is fixed to a side wall of an arm. If two heads are to be suspended, a first suspension for one head and a second suspension for the other head are fixed to opposite side walls of the arm. Since the suspension is fixed to the side wall of the arm, there are no screw heads protruding or projections formed by hot staking on the top and the bottom surfaces of the arm and it is not necessary to make screw holes which extend from the top surface or the bottom surface into the arm perpendicularly to these surfaces. Thus, the vertical thickness of the head carriage assembly can be decreased.

In one embodiment, a disk drive comprises: a rotary magnetic disk, a base for housing the magnetic disk, a top cover for closing the disk in the base to form an enclosure, a circulating filter arranged externally of the magnetic disk to trap dust within the enclosure, and an airflow guide for guiding an airflow which flows out of the circulating filter more to the center side than to the outer edge portion of the magnetic disk. 摘要： In a disk drive actuator head stack assembly, magnetic transducers including magnetoresistive (MR) read heads are connected to a current source and configured to provide an MR sensor current to each MR head wherein the direction of current flow for the MR sensor current in each MR head is the same relative to the actuator for all of the MR heads in the actuator head stack. This configuration allows all of the MR heads in the head stack assembly to be initialized simultaneously by applying a homogeneous magnetic field to the head stack assembly, thus providing the capability of initializing the MR heads at the actuator or disk drive level rather than requiring that the MR heads be initialized individually.
