    • A method of indexing images contained in scanned documents, wherein said scanned documents are stored in a repository, includes: for each document to be stored in the repository, dividing the document into a plurality of sections; scanning the plurality of sections; segmenting each scanned segment according to a predetermined coding model into image segment and non-image segments; associating each of the image segments with the document; and generating an index correlating the image segments with the document. The method may further include, at the time of image recall, displaying the index of image segments in a user interface; and responsive to selection of an image segment from the index, displaying the document information associated with the image segment in the user interface.

    • In accordance with one embodiment, apparatus are provided, which include a digital continuous-tone two-dimensional authentic image and an image processor. Tamper message data is provided which represents a tamper message when viewed. Two halftoning screens are provided to be applied to at least a portion of the continuous-tone two-dimensional authentic image, to embed the tamper message data within a portion of the authentic image, in a manner so as to be substantially not visible in a printed or displayed version of the authentic image absent image processing or tampering of the authentic image. The screens include a first screen to apply first elements arranged in a first way, and a second screen to apply second elements arranged in a second way. A halftoner applies the two halftoning screens to visibly portray desired information of the continuous-tone authentic image. The first screen is applied in a limited area of the authentic image and in a form defined by the tamper message data. The second screen is applied in an area abutting the limited area.

    • A method of compressing a document includes: acquiring an image of the document, the image represented by pixels; segmenting the image into Mixed Raster Content (MRC) planes including a foreground plane (12) that receives a first portion of the pixels, a background plane (14) that receives a second portion of the pixels, and a selector plane (16) that identifies which of the foreground and background planes the pixels belong to; identifying a geometric shape in at least one of the MRC planes; determining if the identified geometric shape has a substantially uniform color; and, replacing the identified shape when it is determined to have a substantially uniform color with a vector graphic representation of the geometric shape.

    • A new information embedding technology is disclosed using conjugate screen concept. More specifically, two screens are applied in a halftoning process, one for the areas that corresponds to the symbol to be embedded (object), and one for the background. Both screens can be conceptually decomposed into a two-layer structure similar to supercells. The top layer determines the overall halftone texture, while the bottom layer, which is conjugate for background and object, carries embedded data. The information can be retrieved digitally or optically. In embedding, there is no restriction of the symbol sizes. The computation is relatively simple and can be implemented in real time. In retrieval, it is relatively robust to registration errors.

    • A method and apparatus for preventing or inhibiting effective reproduction of documents such as currency, checks, stock certificates, and any other printed document including a pre-defined security mark printed therein. The method and apparatus operate to effect a multi-step review of all digital image data acquired from a printed document to be reproduced for purposes of locating any potential security marks and further examining same for purposes of positively identifying a potential security mark as an actual security mark. If a mark is located and verified to be an authentic security mark, effective reproduction of the printed document will not be permitted and/or other security measures will be taken. Processing speed is improved by using run profile analysis to limit the image features that are subjected to computationally intensive template matching operations. Run profiles are tracked using a finite automaton.

    • A method is provided for rendering a color image with a plurality of separations with a multi-level successive-filling halftoning process using a single screen for a plurality of separations. For a separation to be processed, first, from the possible multiple levels for the separation, the set of levels that would be used and the number of dots corresponding to the different levels are decided. These decisions are based on the input level for the separation and input levels for the prior process separations. The location of the dots to be printed for the different levels for the separation is then decided by using the halftone screen, while simultaneously taking into account the placement of printed dots for the prior separations. The selection is done so as to best disperse dots and minimize overlap.
