摘要： A system embodiment comprises at least one respiration sensor, a neural stimulation therapy delivery module, and a controller. The respiration sensor is adapted for use in monitoring respiration of the patient. The neural stimulation therapy delivery module is adapted to generate a neural stimulation signal for use in stimulating the autonomic neural target of the patient for the chronic neural stimulation therapy. The controller is adapted to receive a respiration signal from the at least one respiration sensor indicative of the patient's respiration, and adapted to control the neural stimulation therapy delivery module using a respiratory variability measurement derived using the respiration signal.

Respiration and heart contractions are monitored. A cardio-respiratory ratio such as beats per breath is computed and used in the sleep state determination. Other information, such as heart rate variability (HRV), posture, and activity level can also be used in the sleep state determination. The sleep state information can be used to qualify or trigger storage of other physiological sensor data, or to permit remote sleep study monitoring of a subject, or to control or adjust one or more monitoring, diagnostic, or therapy algorithms, such as, for example a continuous positive airflow pressure (CPAP) device.

In one aspect, machine-implemented methods include the actions of analyzing a machine-readable heart rate series of a monitored individual in the time domain using one or more digital data processing devices, detecting a cyclic variation in heart rate in the heart rate series as a result of the analysis in the time domain, and outputting, over an output, a report characterizing a sleep disorder event based on the detection of the cyclic variation in heart rate in the heart rate series. The cyclic variation in heart rate is indicative of a sleep disorder.
