    • An elongated metal channel having a U-shaped cross-section has a cover and end caps secured thereto forming a housing. Along one wall of the housing are drilled longitudinally spaced holes. In some of the holes (which may have different orientations) are fixed metal collars having secured therein one end of a bundle of optical fibers. The fiber ends are secured by an adhesive which has been cured, after which the ends are polished. The fiber bundles are led through the housing to an opening (which may be in the cover) where a flexible sleeve has one end mounted. The fibers are threaded through the flexible sleeve and secured in a tip at the other end of the sleeve. The fibers in the tip are secured therein by an epoxy and polished. In some cases the metal collars with the fiber bundle are positioned at the end of a gooseneck with a lens mounted adjacent to the tip. The method by which the fibers are mounted in the collars is described.

    • A fiber optic display sign for preselected sequential lighting of one or more of a plurality of transparent side-by-side panels each having viewable indicia thereon. Selective illumination of each of the panels is by a single light source which transmits light through a selective light transmitting device into fiber optic bundles which terminate at their opposite ends at, and are secured in, one or more openings defining a plurality of rows in an elongated light bar. The panels, when secured to the light bar having one edge of each panel in optical alignment with one of the rows of optical fiber bundle ends, may be sequentially illuminated to create distinctive visual effects as in advertising, multi-colored logo display or the like.

    • A device for providing displacement information includes a housing holding a displacement sensor. The displacement sensor includes a coil and a captive core. An electrical measurement of the coil provides information about displacement of the core. The coil has an axis extending in a first direction, wherein the housing has a minimum outside dimension that is less than 3.00 mm when measured perpendicular to that first direction. The housing has an inner surface having a housing inside dimension. The housing is for holding a displacement sensor and a guidance mechanism. The displacement sensor includes a coil and a captive core having a core outside dimension. The guidance mechanism includes a first part and a second part for guiding the core. The first part includes a bearing connected to the housing. The bearing has an axial hole having a hole dimension about equal to the core outside dimension. The core slidably extends through this axial hole. The second part has a second part outside dimension about equal to the housing inside dimension. The guidance mechanism is for resisting lateral movement and lateral rotation of the core while allowing axial movement of the core into and out of the coil.

    • A fiber optic lighting device for providing a light source against and into one end of a fiber optic bundle for use. The device includes a long-life arc lamp which is operably connected within a tubular heat sink. At least one rigid transparent elongated, preferably cylindrical member having ground and polished ends is connected within a mating opening in the heat sink facing the arc lamp, light emitting from the arc lamp passing through the transparent member. The inner polished end of the transparent member includes a dielectric layer applied thereto which is selected to filter and reflect back into the heat sink at least some of the infrared components of the light emitting from the arc lamp. Most, if not all, of the ultraviolet component is filtered out by the transparent member. The light emitting from the outer end of the transparent member is thus absent both ultraviolet and infrared components for further transmission through the fiber optic bundle. An opaque enclosure, a fan for enhanced heat dissipation and additional light-containing and modifying elements are also provided.

    • A fiber optics light device particularly adapted for use in illuminating an object in conjunction with an optical comparitor. The device, which transmits light to the object from a separate light source, has a generally U-shaped housing having a first pair of flexible conduits, each one of the pair connected at one end and laterally extending in the same direction from each one of the arms of the housing. A second pair of flexible conduits is connected at one end and laterally extend from the cross-member of the housing. Optical fibers extend between the distal ends of the corresponding first and second pair of conduits and through the corresponding housing arms transmitting light therethrough. The distal ends of the first conduits emit light against the object and are adjustably positionable for that purpose.
