    • The present invention relates to method for recording program specific information (PSI) for a recorded data stream in an optical disk such as a high-density digital versatile disk (HD-DVD) and providing the recorded PSI to a presenting device such as a digital television. This method writes program or stream specific information in a management data recording area of a high-density disk, and when the recorded data stream is reproduced, determines whether it is time to send the stream specific information, obtains stream specific information corresponding to a stream object being reproduced, or to be reproduced based on the determination result, and transmits the obtained stream specific information. This method can maintain the disk storage capacity for real video and/or audio data by recording stream specific information in a management recording area of a high-density disk, and provide the stream specific information to a digital television promptly when it is necessary, thereby reducing the time duration of blank screen or discontinuity in video and/or audio presentation.

    • The present invention relates to a method and apparatus for accomplishing a requested operation selectively based upon features of other equipment between equippments connected through a digital interface such as the IEEE 1394. The feature-dependent operating apparatus consists of a connector sending and receiving data through the digital interface; a memory storing feature information of a connected equipment received through the connector; a pickup detecting video and/or audio data from a data storage medium; a controller controlling the pickup to detect data from the data storage medium based on the stored feature information, converting the format of the detected data into a format specified in the stored feature information, and generating an advisory message informing a mismatch between the format of data to offer and the format specified in the feature information; and a data sender transmitting data detected by the pickup or the generated message to the connected equipment through the digital interface. This feature-dependent operating apparatus is able to adjust functions and processing capacity of a equipment to the maximal or universal capacity of the connected equipment automatically, or to inform a viewer of the cause of possible malfunction if the features of the connected equipment are not same, when data by a requested operation are to be transmitted to the connected equipment, thereby improving the convenience of a viewer.

    • A process and system for creating and recording still picture management data in a rewritable storage media making it possible to reduce the amount of navigation information and index information necessary by grouping a plurality of still pictures according to their attributes, thus sharing navigation information and recording index information of still pictures with common attributes linked by the shared navigation information. In the method of the present invention, instead of creating navigation information and index information of each still picture, a plurality of still pictures share navigation information according to their attributes or those of audio signals linked to the still pictures and index information of the still pictures are recorded based on the shared navigation information, thereby effectively reducing the amount of navigation information and index information required for reproduction of still pictures recorded on a rewritable storage media.

    • This invention provides a method of managing the navigation data for a rewritable recording medium which are referred to for control of recording, editing, and reproduction. It enables to access to each information table in the navigation data directly by referring to the start address, which is kept in the first information table in the navigation data. When data are recorded to the rewritable recording medium, the management data which are relevant to the data to be recorded are created and written to the relevant information tables, which are accessed directly based on the start addresses. When data on the recording medium are reproduced, the information tables which contain management data required for reproduction of the requested data are located directly by the start addresses. Then, the data are read out from the rewritable recording medium and reproduced in reference to the management data. Compared to the prior navigation data structure, where the information tables are accessed through calculation of the end addresses, the present invention allows to reduce the access time to each information table, contributing to the real-time operation for writing and reproduction.
