    • PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an end cutter that has a handle portion that can be positioned to more ergonomically favorable positions relative to a portion that is extending through a trocar. SOLUTION: The surgical instrument particularly suited to endoscopic use is disclosed. Various embodiments include an end effector that is sized to be inserted through a trocar. An elongated shaft assembly is coupled to the end effector and a control handle. The elongated shaft assembly has a distal portion that is adjacent to the end effector for insertion into the trocar. The elongated shaft assembly further has a proximal portion that is remote from the distal portion such that the proximal portion protrudes from the trocar when the end effector and distal portion are inserted therethrough. The control handle is articulatably coupled to the proximal portion of the elongated shaft assembly to enable a surgeon to move the handle portion to a more ergonomically comfortable position while carrying out an endoscopic procedure.       SOLUTION: The device for shrinking the stomach for easily forming a linear peroral path passing through the stomach comprises a slender body comprising a proximal end part and a distal end part. The slender body is formed approximately in the shape of a sine curve with at least one tissue-engaged surface oriented so that a needle can pass. The slender body also comprises at least one needle path formed near the at least one tissue-engaged surface. The at least one needle path passes approximately the center of the sine-curve-shaped waveform demarcated by the at least one tissue-engaged surface so that the needle can completely pass the stomach tissue in contact with the tissue-engaged surface of the slender body. The slender body further comprises a suture path.

In one embodiment, the actuation mechanism applies the compressive force to deploy the anastomotic ring by drawing opposing ends of a ring deployment mechanism together. The actuation mechanism comprises a spring or other resilient member, movable from a first position to a second position in order to actuate the ring deployment mechanism. One mechanism can move the spring to the second position in response to the input by a user while retaining the spring at the first position, and one mechanism can dislodge the spring.
