    • Continuous backup from a local storage device to a remote storage device includes subdividing the local storage device into subsections, providing a time indicator that is modified periodically, and, in response to a request to write new data to a particular subsection of the local storage device at a particular time, maintaining at the remote storage device data being overwritten by the new data according to the particular subsection and according to a value of the indicator at the particular time. Providing continuous backup from a local storage device to a remote storage device may also include restoring the local storage device to a state thereof at a particular point in time by writing the maintained data to the remote storage device and transferring the data from the remote storage device to the local storage device.

The shared memory has a message section having a message list made up of an ordered sequence of message slots in which processors leave message for each other.     • Handling a write operation to write data to a section of a storage device includes determining if the section needs to be copied to at least a first target device and, if the section of the storage device needs to be copied to the at least first target device, providing the data to a memory location and confirming completion of the write operation prior to copying the section of the storage device to the at least first target device. Handling a write operation to write data to a section of a storage device may also include determining if a slot in a cache memory corresponding to the section of the storage device needs to be copied to at least a second target device. If so, then in some cases the slot may be copied to the at least second target device prior to providing the data to the memory location.

    • A mechanism to support remote mirroring of storage devices by data storage systems in a one-to-many switched environment. Each data storage system includes a disk director that is adapted to control at least one device group that is supported in a mirrored configuration with a corresponding device group controlled by one of the other data storage systems. For each device group and corresponding device group, there are first ports associated with the device group and second ports associated with the corresponding device group. A switch element is adapted to connect one of the first ports to at least one of the second ports so that data may be exchanged between the ports for each device group and corresponding device group. The disk director selects which first port is to be connected to which second port via the switch element in the establishment of a logical link. Thus, each port connected to the switch is capable of achieving multiple connections to multiple destinations for increased connectivity, redundancy and performance (load balance) without additional hardware.

Providing continuous backup of a storage device may also include restoring the storage device to a state thereof at a particular point in time by writing the maintained data to the storage device. Writing the maintained data to the storage device may include constructing subsections of the data by combining separate portions thereof corresponding to the same subsection.
