    • An inflatable air bag, in its uninflated state, is folded against a seat belt that is secured around the waist of a vehicle occupant and is enclosed by a tubular webbing making the assembly appear as a typical seat belt. Upon a sudden deceleration of a vehicle, the air bag inflates and takes an L-shaped form against an occupant of a vehicle. A rearward protrusion from the upright portion of the L bears against the upper torso portion of the occupant. The rearward protrusion does not bear against the face of either a fifth, fiftieth or ninety-fifth percentile occupant. When inflated the air bag in addition to the rearward protrusion, has a torso section, a waist section and a lap section. The waist section functions to bear against the occupant to push the occupant back into the seat. The torso and lap sections function to push the occupant back and down into the seat. The deployment sequence of the inflation of the sections is determined by the method of folding the air bag against the seat belt. A deflation member operates to release the inflation fluid from the air bag a predetermined time after inflation of the air bag.

    • First and second ganged switches having first and second operative relationships are normally operative in the first relationship and are actuated by an external mechanism to the second relationship. In the first relationship, the first switch shunts and short circuits a pyrotechnic device and the second switch shunts and short circuits an energy storage member such as a capacitor. In the second operative relationship of the second switch, a battery charges the capacitor and also introduces a starting signal to an electronic timing circuit to institute a timing sequencer by the circuit for a pre-selected period that is selected via a series of inputs to the electronic timer. When the pre-selected time period has been timed out, the timing circuit introduces a signal to a solid state electronic switch which is normally in a non-conductive state to prevent actuation. The signal from the timing circuit causes the electronic switch to provide a low impedance. In the second operative relationship of the first and second switches, the capacitor discharges through a circuit including the second switch, the electronic switch, the capacitor and the pyrotechnic device. This discharge fires the pyrotechnic device.

    • Apparatus for variably controlling the burn time of a fixed amount of gas generating material used for inflating purposes. Gas developed by combustion of the gas generating material passes through a conduit. A blocking means is provided which, when selectively disposed in the conduit, decreases the cross-sectional area thereof and partially blocks the flow of the generated gas therethrough. The burn time of the gas generating material then decreases and the mass flow rate of the generated gas through the conduit is increased. The apparatus is especially adapted for use with motor vehicle passive restraint systems wherein, upon impact of the vehicle, a bag is rapidly inflated by the gas to protect passengers or other mobile objects of the vehicle.

    • A swimming device for increased underwater resistance increases resistance while underwater for purposes of rehabilitation and fitness. The device includes a glove having a main portion and a plurality of finger portions and a thumb portion whereby the glove is configured for covering a human hand. A channel-forming member has a peripheral wall extending upwardly from the main portion of the glove and a top wall extending between a first side and a second side of the peripheral wall. The channel-forming member has a pair of separator portions extending downwardly from the peripheral wall wherein the separator portions are configured for separating the channel-forming member into a plurality of channels. A pair of fins is coupled to the channel-forming member wherein the fins and the channels are configured for increasing underwater resistance when the glove is positioned on the hand and moved underwater.
