    • A novel cyclic hydrocarbon derivative is disclosed, which is represented by formula (I): wherein Y and Y each independently represent a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a cyano group, a cyanato group (OCN), a thiocyanato group (SCN), a trifluoromethoxy group (OCF3), a difluoromethoxy group (OCF2H), a 2,2,2-trifluoroethoxy group (OCH2CF3), a trifluoromethyl group (CF3), R, -OR, -COOR or -OCOR, wherein R represents an alkyl group having from 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an alkenyl group having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms or an alkoxylalkyl group having from 2 to 20 carbon atoms, provided that at least one of Y and Y represents R, -OR, -COOR or -OCOR; Z, Z , Z , Z , and Z each independently represent a single bond, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -C IDENTICAL C-, -COO-, -OCO-, -CH2O-, -OCH2-, -(CH2)4-, -(CH2)3-O- or -O-(CH2)3-; ring A represents a group of formula (II): wherein X , X , X , X , X , X , X , X , X , and X each independently represent a hydrogen atom (H) or a deuterium atom (D), provided that at least one of them represents a deuterium atom (D); rings K, L, J, M and N each independently represent a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group, a 1,4-cyclohexenylene group, a trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group substituted with 1 to 4 substituents selected from a fluorine atom and a cyano group, a 1,4-phenylene group, a 1,4-phenylene group substituted with 1 to 4 substituents selected from a fluorine atom, a chlorine atom, a cyano group and a methyl group, a 1,3-dioxane-2,6-diyl group, a pyrimidine-2,5-diyl group, a pyridine-2,5-diyl group, a pyrazine-2,5-diyl group or a group of formula (III): wherein X , X , X , X , X , X , X , X , X , and X each independently represent a hydrogen atom (H) or a deuterium atom (D), provided that at least one of them represents a deuterium atom (D); in which the ring of formula (III) may be the same or different with ring A; and k, l, m, and n each independently represent 0 or 1, provided that the sum of k, l, m, and n is 0, 1 or 2. The compound of the present invention is useful as an electro-optic liquid crystal display material.
