    • A potentiometer is disclosed which comprises an opaque screen element (10) and light emitters and collectors (92) for transmitting light through the screen and detecting the light transmitted through the screen. The screen has three sections (A, V and B). The sections (A, V and B) have bars which are parallel to one another and extend transverse to the direction of movement of the screen (10). The section (A) has bars which are arranged in groups comprising the same number of bars, but each of a different thickness. The section (V) has two parts (35, 36), the first part has bars which are formed in the same manner as the section (A) except they are a mirror image to the bars in section (A) and each group comprises less bars than are in the groups in section (A). The second part of section (V) has individual bars which increase in thickness. Section (B) is a mirror image of section (A). This configuration allows for any drifting of voltage indicative of a change in light intensity which is detected by the emitter to be identified and compensated for because the intensity of light passing through the sections and plotted against position forms a U or V-shaped profile, with the apex identifying the maximum or minimum light intensity and therefore voltage at the collector.

    • The invention provides methods and kits for obtaining a prognosis for a patient having or at risk of developing an inflammatory condition. The method generally comprises determining a Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) genotype of a patient for one or more polymorphisms in the PAI-1 gene of the patient, comparing the determined genotype with known genotypes (for the polymorphism that correspond with the ability of the patient to recover from the inflammatory condition and identifying patients based on their prognosis. PAI-1 genotype screening may be useful in identifying patients who would benefit from increased monitoring by healthcare professionals, and/or possible therapeutic intervention, if the patient were to develop inflammation due to systematic inflammation response syndrome (SIRS), bacterial infection, bacteraemia, sepsis, septic shock, organ dysfunction, and trauma. The invention also provides for methods of identifying other polymorphisms that correspond with the ability of the patients to recover from the inflammatory condition.

    • An automated or semi-automated defibrillator (AED) system includes an AED and a cartridge attachable to the AED. The cartridge includes electrode pads and a power source such as a battery or fuel cell, which may recharge a defibrillator battery, power defibrillator circuitry, or both. Because the cartridge includes both a power source and electrode pads, one can replace the power source and the pads at the same time by replacing a single cartridge. Furthermore, in defibrillator systems where the power source charges the defibrillator battery, the power source can be selected to have the same life as the pads, thus making it practical to replace the power source and pads at the same time. In addition, maintenance for such a charging defibrillator system typically costs less than for a non-charging system because it often costs less to replace the power source than to replace the defibrillator battery.

    • Systems and/or methods are presented that facilitate determining the contextual influence of a user in referrals of products or services, and determining an amount of compensation for successful referrals based on the contextual influence of the user. A central service component can track activity and receive data associated with referrals, including data related to the number and type of referrals, and the number of successful referrals. An evaluation component can analyze referral data associated with the user and can determine a conversion ratio as the number of successful referrals compared to the total number of referrals. The evaluation component can utilize the conversion ratio to facilitate determining an amount of compensation that can be awarded and distributed to the user based on the influence of the user within the context of the product or service referred by the user.
